The fact that you have to work during the day makes you use your free time more effectively and enjoy every moment. Don't overthink it, just book your trip. You won't regret it!
I think it's a great way to spend an extended period in one place and explore the country. Most full-time employees don't have enough vacation time to travel for a month. I'm sure the change of environment has a positive impact on my creativity and generates new ideas for my work, which is a win-win situation for both myself and my clients/employer.
What do you think of it? What things surprised you the most?
I have to say it was one of my best recent decisions. Some might call it one of my craziest decisions to travel alone to Africa during the Corona Times :). To be honest, everything is amazing, I feel much happier meeting new people and seeing new places, which has made me even more productive at work. As for surprises, there have been many: the simple airport vs. the super-controlled, well-built train station with a 2-hour check-in time; the fact that in some places there are just no sidewalks on the streets; the best: soooo delicious and cheap mangoes, OMG!
How do you experience COVID in Kenya?
When I talk to people, no one knows anyone who has had the coronavirus, which makes me think it's not as widespread as in Europe, where we probably all know a few people who have passed on the virus. Masks are mandatory everywhere (don’t worry, probably not while swimming in the ocean), and when you enter an indoor space, there’s a temperature check, and your hands are disinfected by security.
Are you more productive than at home?
I would say that I’m equally productive, no matter where I work, because the work needs to get done, even if I were on the moon. While working in Kenya, I feel less stressed when a stressful situation arises, which ultimately makes me more productive. I’m also more productive and faster because I know something fun awaits me after my workday (like a beach walk or just chilling outside with a glass of wine with my new friends). Unfortunately, in Europe, with the lockdown situations and the fearful people around you, it’s not easy to make plans after work.
Tips for others interested in such a long-distance trip?
Don't listen to anyone who says you can make this trip once Corona ends! NO! Life is too short for that. I know that things can go wrong, like a last-minute PCR test or rules changing slightly, but don’t worry, Kenya is the place to be! If you have doubts about travel restrictions, get in touch with ministries and embassies and read the current rules. Even if travel is advised against in your country, it’s often not banned, and borders with third countries are open. Flights are cheaper and now often come with flexibility to change. Charlie's Travel will always do its best to handle all possible situations. Last but not least – don’t forget to bring two packs of sunscreen and DEET repellent! You can buy cosmetics here, but the selection is not great, and it’s more expensive.
Why would you recommend it to others?
I would definitely recommend such a trip. It’s truly a life-changing experience. In certain situations, you might feel a little outside your comfort zone, which makes you stronger and more flexible. The fact that you have to work during the day helps you spend your free time more effectively and enjoy every moment. The group of people you travel with are likely to be very friendly and open-minded, making your trip even more enjoyable. I also felt very safe in Kenya, and the local people are super kind and always willing to help. Don’t overthink it, just book your trip—you won’t regret it!
