Zambia Travel
Zambia is Southern Africa’s rawest secret. Here, we trade crowded safari highways for walking trails, deep river gorges, and late-night campfire stories with guides who have walked these wilderness paths their whole lives. Ready for a real adventure?
Why is Zambia the perfect country for you as a traveler?
To us, Zambia feels like stepping into a wild, untamed world where nature dictates the pace. It’s an immense country full of raw contrasts: one day you’re navigating your 4x4 through the deep basalt walls of the Batoka Gorge, the next you watch the horizon melt into the Kafue wetlands, the dense forests of Luangwa, or the endless golden plains of Liuwa.
And since almost everyone speaks English, you can just leave that translation app in your pocket. At a dusty crossroads, you simply ask the guy with the big smile and the bicycle pump about the road conditions, and before you know it, you’ve spent twenty minutes chatting about football or the best fishing spots along the river.
The real adventure kicks off the moment you turn the key in the ignition. No thick windows or crowded safari buses separating you from the wilderness; you’re behind the wheel of a fully equipped overland 4x4, tackling sandy tracks, deep ruts, and river crossings yourself. One afternoon you’re gliding down the Zambezi River in a canoe while elephants bathe just a few meters away, the next evening you’re sitting down for a steaming plate of nsima in the backyard of our partner Enella in Lusaka. Zambia is adventurous, bumpy, unpolished, and incredibly rewarding.
But let’s be honest: Zambia isn’t for travelers looking for a glossy, effortless holiday. It’s a massive, remarkably safe country full of fantastic wild camping spots, made for people who don't blink at a pothole-ridden dirt road, families with teenagers who’d rather build a campfire than scroll on Wi-Fi, and travelers who see braving the elements as the ultimate sport. Zambia doesn’t put on a show for tourists; it simply invites you to take the wheel and join in.
Discover Zambia with our local partners
You don’t get Zambia from a safari car window. You get it when you’re chewing on warm, roasted groundnuts with Bwalya while the chaos of Lusaka's market roars around you. Or when you're getting your hands sticky stirring steaming nshima in the kitchen with Enalla.
It’s hiking down into the rocky depths of Batoka Gorge with Jonathan to pitch a tent right on the banks of the rushing Zambezi. And it's sitting around a crackling fire with Luangwa Valley rangers, whispering about the leopard that just slipped through the shadows.
We don’t do tourist bubbles or corporate middle-men. These are the people we know and work with on the ground. When you travel with them, your money goes straight into their pockets and communities. No marketing fluff, just real connection.

We had a fantastic trip through Namibia with two families with teenagers. The trip was fully planned according to our wishes and tailored to the composition of the group. The personal approach, the communication, the preparation… everything was top-notch. Our next trip to Africa will be with Charlie's Travels again!

We booked our honeymoon to Namibia with this organization, and how fantastic was it? We received clear information beforehand, they used a detailed app, and we received thoughtful messages before and during the trip to check in. Truly an organization with a heart for the mission of showcasing the beauty of Africa. When we looked into the organization further after the trip, we understand why. Thank you for everything! We didn't feel like just a number, received incredibly quick answers to questions before and during the trip, and received a beautiful, customized itinerary where everything was perfectly arranged everywhere on-site. You gave us the trip of a lifetime ❤️ Best regards and see you again! Laura and Arne

I look back with immense pleasure on my pioneering trip to Madagascar with Charlie's Travels. What made this trip so special for me was its off-the-beaten-track nature. We visited places you wouldn't easily get to as an ordinary tourist, saw beautiful nature, and had a lot of contact with the local people. That made the experience very authentic. One of the biggest highlights was driving off-road myself. In addition, there were so many unexpected moments that I won't soon forget: a football match against the locals in the Tsaranoro Valley, unexpectedly finding myself in a local sacrificial ritual, and a canoe trip that went very differently than planned. We thought we were going on a sailboat trip, but it turned out to be a few leaky canoes. In hindsight, it actually became one of the best memories of the trip for me. That is also the charm of a pioneering trip: not everything goes as planned, but it is precisely those unexpected moments that make the adventure complete. I also appreciated the variety of accommodations. From homestays, B&Bs, and hotels to sleeping in a tent under the starry sky. That fit perfectly with the adventurous nature of the trip. I do think, however, that a pioneering journey isn't for everyone. You need to be flexible and be able to accept that plans sometimes change. If you can surrender to that and simply enjoy the journey as it unfolds, that is precisely what yields the most beautiful stories and memories. The reason I am not giving 5 stars is that the communication before and during the trip was sometimes a bit disorganized. I would also have liked to see more transparency regarding certain costs. In my opinion, those are areas where Charlie's Travels can still improve. Despite that, I look back on a fantastic trip full of special experiences and memories that I won't soon forget. If you are looking for an adventurous, authentic journey off the beaten path and are open to the unexpected, then I can certainly recommend a trip with Charlie's Travels.

Sjoerd from Charlies Travels organized my trip through Morocco, and it was fantastic! Due to limited time, I skipped the big cities and mainly visited the less crowded places in the interior. For a large part of the time, I stayed with families and experienced just how warm the culture of this country is. My 'guides' felt more like friends; they were hospitable, took me to visit family, and managed to strike a perfect balance between 'going on with life' while showing me the most beautiful spots in Morocco. For me, the added value of Charlies lay in selecting these amazing, not always obvious places, and the accompanying partners/guides/families who were willing to give me an inside look. Highly recommended for everyone!

Went on a pioneering trip to Senegal, Gambia & Guinea-Bissau with Charlie's Travels. It was special to visit such pristine countries without mass tourism. The difference between Senegal & Gambia was already significant – and the trip was very diverse. From beaches and big cities to eco-lodges & local markets. Highly recommended to utilize the expertise of Charlie's team; it saved a lot of hassle :)

We went to Uganda and Kenya for almost a month and we did not leave dissapointed! Our goal was to visit "off the beaten track" destinations and experience real local culture and Charlie's did not let us down. In Uganda we saw TONS of wildlife, with the bike safari in Lake Mburo being the undisputable highlight... unforgettable. We spent a day with the Batwa people, which was a unique culturally enriching experience. In Kenya we got to relax at the beach in a luxurious resort and get our tan on! All the tour guides that were organized by Charlie's were both knowledgable and wonderfully enthusiastic. This was the most memorable vaction in years, and we would reccomend booking a trip with Charlie's to anyone (if you are adventurous enough of course ;) ).Posted on Google![]()

Angola surprised me in ways that are difficult to put into words. The country is raw and pure, with landscapes that seem to breathe: the red earth glowing in the sun, endless savannas disappearing into a haze of warmth, and the ocean incessantly beating its rhythm against the coast. With Xavier Rudd playing through the car speakers, everything took on an extra layer of meaning. His music—those earthy sounds, that peace and freedom—seemed to become one with the landscape. As the road wound through villages full of color and smiling faces, it felt as if every song had been written especially for this moment.

I've been to Africa with Charlie's multiple times – Kenya, Uganda, and most recently to Angola: Friendliness and rawness personified, a delightful mix of pure Africa and Portuguese influences. Beautiful, untouched nature, tranquility, and fantastic people. From desert to jungle, from canyons to waves crashing against the rugged coast – what a country. It's wonderful to be taken under Charlie's wing!

Fantastic organization, in short. We traveled to Namibia with a group of 7, and CT guided us through the entire process to set it up exactly how we wanted. During the trip, "our" travel coach Nick was also attentive, asked how we were doing, and arranged a few things for us, such as a New Year's breakfast. CT works with local organizations that we felt comfortable with.

Last October, I went on a pioneering trip to Malawi with Charlie's Travels, and it turned out to be a unique experience. The moments that stuck with me the most are the beautiful hike through Nyika National Park, where we camped in the middle of nature and zebras walked past our tent in the morning; and the evening we all dove into a local pub and danced the night away with the locals. The paradisiacal Likoma Island and the car rides through the stunning African landscape, with spontaneous stops at local bars along the way, are also memories that will stay with me for a long time. Malawi is called 'the warm heart of Africa,' and that is exactly how it felt. It was amazing to discover this country with Charlie's Travels and a wonderful group of people. Highly recommended!

We went to Kenya for a month with our family of 5, all arranged by Charie's Travels, and it was AMAZING. We wanted a mix of off-the-beaten-path and comfort, a mix of adventure and vacation, and they made it all happen. Everything from planning the trip and airport pick-up to hotel bookings and activity arrangements went smoothly. We really had the most amazing time! (so much so that I'm writing this review years after taking this trip, cause we're still talking about it!) Definitely recommend booking your trip with Charlie's Travels!Posted on Google![]()

It was a fantastic experience to go pioneering in Malawi with Charlie's Travels. Truly the warm heart of Africa, with very friendly and open people. Malawi is a country with so many different things to do. We explored the lesser-known north: hiking in Nyika National Park with stunning views over colorful hills, an exciting boat trip across Lake Malawi, and beach vibes and lots of beautiful birds on Likoma Island. There are also beautiful bays and hidden spots along Lake Malawi. The roads are getting better but offer challenges here and there, which is highly recommended for the more adventurous traveler. The setup and organization by Charlie's Travels were excellent, always flexible and tailored to everyone's wishes.

The highlights of travel through Zambia
Use the map and the information to check your favourite places.
Forget the standard viewing decks and cordoned-off tourist trails. This is Zambia on foot, in the kitchen, and on the river, shared with the people who call this wild country home.
- Overnight Batoka Gorge Hike & Camping: rek down steep basalt canyon trails to sleep on a secluded sandy beach by the rushing Zambezi River. You’ll fall asleep to the roar of the rapids and wake up to our local partner Jonathan’s campfire coffee.
- Mokoro Trip on the Upper Zambezi: Glide silently through the reed beds of the Zambezi in a traditional wooden dugout canoe. Your captain? A local partner who has read these river currents since he was old enough to hold a paddle.
- Zambian Culture & Cooking with a Tonga Family: Skip the restaurant. Pull up a wooden stool in a Tonga family’s home, help stir the thick, steaming nshima over an open wood fire, and swap stories about how different, and similar, your daily lives actually are.
- Cooking with Enalla in Lusaka: Master the forearm-burning art of traditional Zambian cooking alongside Enalla. Afterward, you’ll sit down together to tackle a massive matebeto, a feast of local dishes designed to welcome honored guests.
- Street Food & Craft Markets Crawl with Bwalya: Sidestep the tourist stalls. Weave through the aromatic, chaotic market alleys of Lusaka with Bwalya, sampling fried sweet potato and picking out handmade copper crafts while he chats with the local traders.
- Luangwa Valley Walking Safari: Step onto South Luangwa’s dusty trails at sunrise. With a veteran scout leading the way, you’ll track leopard prints in the sand and learn to decode the alarm calls of baboons on foot.
- Kafue National Park Night Patrol: When the sun drops, the bush completely changes. Head out with a spotlight to search for hunting leopards, while the deep, chest-rattling roar of a lion echoes through the pitch-black grass.
- Devil's Pool Edge Swim: Walk across the wet rocks of Livingstone Island with a local guide to peer over the edge of the world's largest waterfall, before leaping into the natural rock pool sitting right on the precipice.
We love wildlife, but we hate bumper-to-bumper traffic. While other parts of Southern Africa get crowded during peak season, Zambia stays beautifully, stubbornly wild. Its parks receive far fewer visitors, meaning more space, fewer vehicles, and a safari that actually feels connected to nature.
- Kafue National Park: One of the last places on earth where you can play explorer. It's massive, raw, and wonderfully empty. You’ll spend hours tracking wildlife without seeing another dusty 4x4.
- South Luangwa National Park: Leopard territory. This is where the walking safari was born. You aren’t observing from a metal box; you're on the ground, feeling the dry grass brush against your shins while keeping an eye on hippos in the river.
- Lower Zambezi National Park: Where the rugged escarpment meets the water. Spend your morning drifting past bathing elephants in a canoe, and your afternoon tracking wild dogs on a classic game drive.
- Liuwa Plain National Park: Wild, flat, and endlessly blue. This remote grassland hosts Africa’s second-largest wildebeest migration and some of the most legendary, battle-scarred hyena clans on the continent.
- Nsumbu National Park: Where the bush meets the beach. Yes, sandy beaches in Zambia. This is where rugged wilderness crashes straight into the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika.
- Kasanka National Park: From October to December, ten million straw-colored fruit bats descend on these swampy woodlands. Stand under the sunset sky as it literally turns black with wings.
- North Luangwa National Park: The ultimate frontier. Strictly managed for walking safaris, there are no roads here, just trackless wilderness with wild black rhinos and your own footprints.
Zambia is massive, incredibly safe, and has some of the wildest camping spots on earth. Plus, almost everyone speaks English meaning you can skip the translation app and dive straight into real conversations over a cold Mosi beer.
- Lovebirds: If your idea of romance is camping under a sky thick with stars, paddling a canoe down wild rapids together, and sharing a sunset drink with absolutely no one else around, this is your place.
- Families with teenagers: Zambia is the ultimate antidote to TikTok. Between white-water rafting down the Batoka Gorge and walking past wild elephants in South Luangwa, they won't even think about looking for Wi-Fi.
- Friend groups: Perfect for active groups. Pack up a rugged 4x4, rent out a small, rustic bush camp in Kafue, and spend your nights sitting around a roaring campfire with a cold beer in hand.
- The Dry Season (June - October): Prime time for wildlife. The bush dries out, animals gather around the remaining water holes, and walking safaris are in full swing. June to August brings crisp, cold nights, and is perfect for huddling around a campfire.
- The Emerald Season (November to April): The rains turn Zambia intensely, electric green. While some remote camps close their doors due to muddy roads, it's a dream for birdwatchers, dramatic lightning photography, and newborn wildlife.
- The Bat Migration (October - December): Ten million fruit bats landing in Kasanka. It’s the largest mammal migration on earth, totally underrated, and completely mind-blowing.
- The Liuwa Plain Migration (November - December): Thousands of wildebeest moving across western Zambia. Raw, wild, and completely free from the safari crowds of East Africa.
- Victoria Falls (Year-Round): There is no bad time, only a different view. February to May is high-water season (you will get soaked), while August to December brings lower water, great visibility, and the chance to plunge into Devil’s Pool.
- Heads up: Zambia is highly seasonal. Unlike Kenya or South Africa, many of our favorite bush camps literally pack up and close during the rains. If you’re traveling between November and April, let’s plan carefully so you don't get stuck in the mud.
