In conversation with Diarra: the only female guide on Île de Gorée

Anyone walking through the narrow alleyways of Île de Gorée, or through the busy streets of Dakar, stands a good chance of crossing paths with Mame Diarra Seck. Diarra isn't just any guide: she is the only female guide on the iconic island of Île de Gorée, and she also conducts city tours throughout Dakar. With her warmth, knowledge, and respect for her country's history, she takes travelers on a journey that goes beyond the standard tourist route. We were curious to hear her story.

Could you introduce yourself?

"I am Mame Diarra Seck, a tour guide in Senegal. I became a guide out of love for the profession and with a healthy dose of ambition."

What do you like most about your work as a guide?

"The best part is the encounters with people from all kinds of countries and cultures. What I really want to share with visitors is just how important my work as a guide actually is: it’s not just about showing places, but about bringing stories to life and accurately passing down history. That way, people can connect with Senegal as it is today, but also understand where we come from."

Why do you enjoy working with Charlie's Travels?

"For me, a good partnership revolves around dedication, care, and respect. Those are precisely the values I see at Charlie's Travels. My last group of travelers from CT was just like that: curious people who wanted to know more about the country and its people, rather than just coming here to check items off a list."

What should visitors know about the history of Île de Gorée?

"Île de Gorée was the center of the transatlantic slave trade, the triangular trade that extended across all of Africa from here. That’s because Gorée is located in the Dakar region, and Dakar, in turn, lies on the westernmost point of the African continent. This made it the perfect location to prepare for the long crossing over the Atlantic Ocean. It is a small island, but the history it carries is immense."

What makes Senegal so special to visit in general?

"Senegal is a country of peace and hospitality that loves to welcome the world. Beyond its impressive history, you'll also find beautiful beaches and key attractions here—like Île de Gorée, of course, but also the Bandia Reserve, the Fatala wildlife reserve, and the African Renaissance Monument. Heading further south, you can enjoy the beautiful, serene nature where everyone can fully unwind and savor delicious fresh food."

Is there a specific moment with a traveler that has stayed with you?

"Definitely. One day, I was on Gorée with an African American tourist. As we stepped into the House of Slaves, she suddenly burst into tears. That moment touched me deeply, and I still think back to it often."

What do you hope visitors remember from their visit to Gorée and Dakar?

"Simply that Gorée is a beautiful island with a painful history—a history that must never be repeated. And that they will always be welcome whenever they decide to return."

Would you like to discover Senegal with an appreciation for its history, culture, and warm hospitality? Diarra would love to guide you through Dakar and across Île de Gorée in a way you'll remember for a long time.
