In March, I had booked an amazing trip to Kenya for me and my group of 11 girls through Charlies Travels. Unfortunately, the trip was cancelled due to the coronavirus measures. While it was getting colder in the Netherlands and we were stuck in lockdown, I secretly began to dream of escaping to another place. With Kenya still on my mind and the desire to explore the African continent, my choice was quickly made.
Remote working in Kenya: greener than expected!
The trip was great! Kenya is much greener than I had expected. The locals are super friendly and laid-back. Being able to work during the week and take amazing trips over the weekend is really a perfect combination. Spotting animals in the wild is a whole different experience compared to Beekse Bergen ;) Of all the safaris (boat, bike, and game drive), I found the motorbike safari the most impressive. It was my first time riding a motorbike, and for 3 days, you cruise over sand, pebbles, and rocks through the beautiful landscape. You camp in the bush and come into contact with the Masai.

Corona in Kenya: what's the situation?
You don't experience much trouble from corona. In Kenya, you have to wear a mask and there's a curfew. Some things are even a bit more innovative than in the Netherlands; when you enter a supermarket or get on a train, they immediately check your temperature. Restaurants and bars are open, though – along the coast, things are a bit more relaxed. Ultimately, you're always with the same group of people, so you're in a nice, safe bubble.
Are you more productive at home?
Remote working is not new to me. As long as I have decent internet, I can get on with things. In Nairobi, there's a nice coworking space within walking distance, and a change of environment is always good for variety and creativity. In the villa by the coast, it's wonderful to be able to take a refreshing swim in the pool or the sea after working hours. All the accommodations have a cleaner, so you don't have to worry about doing laundry. In Diani, you even have your own chef, which certainly benefits your productivity.
Tips for a remote working trip!
If you can do your work online and feel like shaking things up a bit, I would say, go for it! Almost everyone booked the trip last minute, and before you know it, you’ll be spending a month here with a fun group.
