Remote Working in Kenya: In Brief

The most important thing when it comes to remote working is, of course, that your job allows for it. The possibilities are endless: working for yourself, for an employer, or a combination of both. As long as your work can be done online, you’re good to go. When it comes to internet in Kenya, you don’t need to worry. Wifi is available almost everywhere and it's fast too. And don't worry about a dead laptop, the power supply is excellent. Just remember to bring a universal adapter.

The 4 most beautiful places in Kenya to work remotely:

As mentioned earlier, Kenya is an excellent place for remote work. Most of our team lives and works in this East African country and has tested out various workspaces. Here’s our top 4!

1. Remote working at Lake Naivasha

While you're working here with your laptop in the lodge's green garden, curious giraffes and zebras occasionally come by for a look. Just be careful not to daydream for hours as the wildlife strolls around you. One thing's for sure: the adrenaline flows through your body here! That boring report will suddenly be finished in minutes. Need a break? Take a stroll through the lush greenery and reach the lake in just a few minutes. Here, hippos are relaxing in the water, and monkeys swing through the trees. If that doesn't boost your energy levels, we don't know what will! Hippos
Charlie’s Tip! Lake Naivasha is centrally located, making it easy to get out and explore during your free time. Cycle among the wildlife at Hell’s Gate, take a motorbike ride on Mount Suswa, sleep on the crater's edge, go horseback riding at Sanctuary Farm, or hike up Mount Longonot.

2. Remote working on the Kenyan Coast: Kilifi

Waking up to the sound of the sea in the morning, stretching, and after a refreshing shower, plopping down with your laptop by the pool – that's life at Distant Relatives. Fresh fish on the barbecue and bonfires at sunset are the norm here. This ecological gem is located close to Kilifi Creek. Within minutes, you're standing at the crystal-clear water and white sandy beach. Here, you’ll quickly meet the “digital nomad” community and can cuddle away your work stress with the resident dog, Mowgli.
Charlie’s tip! During weekends, evenings, or whenever you schedule your free time, water sports enthusiasts will definitely be in their element. Additionally, there are deep mangrove forests just waiting to be explored.

3. More of the Kenyan Coast: Remote working in Lamu

Along Kenya's tropical coast lie several small islands, including Lamu, the oldest town in Kenya. The workspaces are endless: on a sunny rooftop terrace with views of the ocean or at a café with a great cup of coffee. During a break or in your free time, you can wander through the town or have lunch with your toes in the sand on the beach. Lamu
Charlie’s tip! Around Lamu, traditional dhows are used as transportation on the water. Hop on a dhow and explore the deep mangrove forests!

4. Remote working among the elephants: Amboseli

Completely disconnect from the rest of the world, focusing on your work, far away in the magical Maasai landscape. Music in your ears and a fresh cup of coffee on your desk. With Mount Kilimanjaro in the background, you'll find complete peace. Your work energy rises as you see elephants wandering in the distance. Despite its remote location, there are beautiful workspaces with great internet and power supplies. Kenya-Uganda-Amboseli-Kilimanjaro-Laysa Ben Aissa
Tip from Charlie! Hop on a motorbike with the Maasai for an amazing safari adventure over the weekend! Amboseli is a world-famous park, known for its large elephant population, as well as many big cats like lions and cheetahs.

"From vast hilly landscapes in Masaai land to the dry desert and hot springs at Magadi, staying with a Masaai family and sleeping in a tent among the wildlife, having breakfast with fresh pancakes in the morning sun and going to bed after a beer by the campfire, it was an unforgettable holiday within a holiday.
