Sun, Sea, Zen: Yoga in Kenya

Also in kenya, the originally Indian sport - or way of life? Meditation? Well, what is it really? - is hot and happening. Literally hot: throw down that yoga mat in a nice spot in the sun or go for some upward facing dogs and warrior stands on the vast beach.

Zen by the sea

Kenya is full of beautiful spots where you can get yourself into all kinds of poses. Especially on the coast you will find enough gems to completely recover from all the adventures during your anniversary trip. Of course, you can park your lazy ass in the white sand for a few days and do nothing but lubricate, turn and consume. But while you're lying there... Grab a yoga mat, put those legs on your neck and clear your mind for a while. What to expect from a good yoga session on the Kenyan coast? You start the day just after sunrise with a soothing yoga class on the beach. Stare at the azure ocean, feel a nice breeze glide along your skin and shake those stiff muscles loose. For one second, you forget completely where you are. When the sun starts to burn harder and harder after an hour of stretching, it's time for a nice breakfast. Let the day begin! Is such an extended yoga session a tad too much for you? Of course, improving your handstand on a SUP board or doing a tree pose on a surfboard is just as well.

Yoga Valhalla

Do you fall into the ranks of absolute yoga geeks who even prefer sleeping in the downward facing dog? Then you should plan your anniversary trip around the Lamu Yoga Festival no matter what. With some 150 classes and workshops, the small island of Lamu breathes yoga, yoga and more yoga for four days. As far as we are concerned, you can't think of a better place for this festival: pole pole, or slowly, is the motto in Lamu and you won't see cars here either, as everything is done tranquilo by donkey. How zen do you want it to be? Namasté!

Stretch And The City

Even if you end your Kenyan adventure in hectic Nairobi, you can completely unwind physically and mentally before folding yourself in your plane seat back to the Netherlands. So our colleagues can regularly be found at The Shine Centre for some good stretching exercises. From acro yoga and beginners' classes to power yoga and Ashtanga classes, it's all possible here. The teachers at this yoga studio teach through The Africa Yoga Project: a foundation that focuses on fighting unemployment among young people by training them to become yoga teachers. We get very happy with local projects like this. Getting totally zen somewhere by the bright blue sea, on top of a mountain or in the middle of the bustling buzz Nairobi during your anniversary trip in Kenya? That can be arranged! Together with our lustrum experts, you can put together your ideal trip - including a good dose of yoga - to Kenya.

"From vast hilly landscapes in Masaai land to the dry desert and hot springs at Magadi, staying with a Masaai family and sleeping in a tent among the wildlife, having breakfast with fresh pancakes in the morning sun and going to bed after a beer by the campfire, it was an unforgettable holiday within a holiday.
