When Is the Best Time to Visit South Africa?

Weather is a key factor when planning your trip. Do you prefer warm boots and cozy sweaters over sunscreen? Then South Africa might not be your match. The country is known for its tropical climate, featuring alternating dry and wet seasons.

Tropical Climate: Dry and Rainy Seasons in South Africa

South Africa is enchanting year-round, but July stands out as the coolest month. Calling it “winter” – or even defining “winter” in such a vast country – is tricky. In the Cape region, winters bring rain, strong winds, and temperatures around 15°C. Meanwhile, the eastern coast lets you stroll the beaches in swimwear with temperatures reaching 28°C and barely a drop of rain. However, nights can be chilly, especially in the Drakensberg Mountains. Temperatures vary greatly by season and region due to South Africa’s immense size.

When Is the Best Time for a Safari in South Africa?

The African winter is the best time for a safari. This dry season ensures leafless trees, making wildlife easier to spot. During other periods, spotting animals can be trickier due to the lush vegetation in safari parks.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cape Town?

The ideal time to visit Cape Town depends on your preferences and planned activities. Generally, there are two main seasons:

Summer in Cape Town (November – March)

For many, this is the best time to visit Cape Town, thanks to the sunny weather. You can enjoy beaches and plenty of outdoor activities. Be aware, though, that it gets bustling during this period.

Disclaimer: From December 16 to January 16, it’s not just busy—it’s crowded, and prices skyrocket for various activities. If traveling during this time, make restaurant and activity reservations well in advance.

Winter in Cape Town (April – October)

Cape Town’s winter months bring cooler, sometimes rainy weather. It’s an excellent time for wine lovers, as the vineyards in nearby regions turn lush green. Plus, there’s no need to book restaurants or activities far ahead, making it perfect for spontaneous travelers!

Is South Africa Safe?

How safe South Africa is depends on the region and circumstances. Some areas have higher crime rates, and certain neighborhoods are less secure. But that’s not unique—it’s similar to many other countries. As long as you use common sense, you’ll be fine.

Live by the Sun

Follow the sun’s schedule: get up early and head to bed early. Avoid walking alone at night. If you’re heading out after dark, take a taxi—it’s worth the few extra bucks for peace of mind.

How Safe Is Cape Town?

Many adventurers prioritize Cape Town when planning their trip. While it’s often labeled a dangerous city, it’s manageable with some precautions. Our colleague Seba recently spent a month in Cape Town and shares his insights: “Cape Town is generally safe if you use common sense. Be mindful of which neighborhoods you visit and avoid townships, even during the day. Don’t leave items in your car, as even small things can attract thieves. Stay alert in busy areas, keep valuables hidden, and be street-smart. While crime exists, you can enjoy this beautiful city with awareness.”

Exploring the Eastern Loop? You’ll likely drive a Toyota Hilux Single or Double Cab, depending on your group size. While these are 4x4 vehicles, camping gear isn’t usually needed as the route includes stops at comfortable lodges.

Self-Drive: Cape Town & West Coast

On the West Coast or around Cape Town, standard cars will suffice—just four wheels and a steering wheel, like Uncle Bob’s car.

How Much Does a Flight to South Africa Cost?

Flights to South Africa take about 11 hours and can cost between €600 and €1,200. Prices depend on when you book and travel. Compare rates on sites like Skyscanner or Kayak, but book directly with the airline for the best deal.
