Our honeymoon had to be adventurous, breathtaking, and unforgettable. Earlier this year, Nadine was recommended to check out Charlie’s Travels by a colleague. After our first Skype meeting with Charlie & Hendrik, we were immediately sold on the idea of going to Kenya. To this day, we have no regrets. Want to know why this trip was AMAZING in one word? Read on below!
Ronald and Nadine got married on June 30, 2017. To celebrate, they took an unforgettable honeymoon through Kenya.
Lake Naivasha
After a smooth flight, we arrived in Nairobi and headed to Wildebeest Eco Camp, a wonderfully peaceful spot in the otherwise bustling city. The next morning, we met our personal driver, who took us to Lake Naivasha, about a three-hour drive from Nairobi. Here, we stayed at a stunning campsite right by the lake, surrounded by countless African acacia trees. We were given a charming little hut with a view of the lake.
That very afternoon, we went on a sunset boat tour and were immediately captivated by the sheer number of hippos. The following day was all about a cycling safari through Hell’s Gate National Park. How amazing is it to ride your bike through breathtaking nature while spotting zebras and giraffes on either side of the trail?!
Mt. Suswa
The next day, we continued our journey to Suswa, where we had arranged to meet two Maasai warriors, Ruben and Samuel. Our thirst for adventure was definitely satisfied after a two-hour motorbike ride. We hopped on the back of the bikes and sped through the wilderness on our way to their village. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with (very sweet) tea and delicious chapati (a type of pancake).
After a friendly football match with the children, Ruben and Samuel took us to explore a cave. Using the light from our phones, we navigated through the dark tunnels toward the bats. It was incredible to see hundreds, possibly thousands, of bats hanging from the ceilings. Not long after, we came across a pile of dung, and Ruben explained that it was from a leopard and couldn’t be far away since it was still fresh. The thought of a leopard watching us from behind a large rock added a thrilling edge to the experience.
The most extraordinary moment of our entire trip began that evening: dinner. The men had brought in a goat, which they slaughtered in a peaceful and respectful manner. Witnessing this up close was impactful—not only because it was our first time seeing it, but also because of how grateful the family was for this goat. The entire family gathered around the campfire to share the meal. The finest cuts of meat, including the kidneys, were reserved for the 90-year-old grandfather of the family.
Giraffe Center
The next morning, we headed back to civilisation, where our driver was waiting for us. From there, we drove to the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi—our first tourist attraction of the trip. When planning the journey, we’d made it clear that we weren’t fans of touristy spots. Hendrik and Charles took this to heart brilliantly, as we barely encountered any tourists throughout our entire trip.
That said, we were thrilled to have made a stop at the Giraffe Centre. Here, you can feed the giraffes, allowing you to get an up-close look at these incredible animals. While seeing a giraffe in the wild is undoubtedly the ultimate experience, having the chance to touch them was a truly special and unforgettable moment.
Motorsafari in Amboseli
That same afternoon, we set off on motorbikes in search of wildlife, heading towards Amboseli National Park. It didn’t take long before we spotted giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and huge African elephants. The next afternoon, we went on an afternoon safari with our own driver, safe in a vehicle. Soon, our driver heard that lions had been spotted, and we sped over to the location. A male and female lion were peacefully resting. After about five minutes, they disappeared into the tall grass—just in time for us to catch a glimpse!
As we were about to leave the park, we encountered an elephant blocking the road. The driver explained that it was quite aggressive, as it was snorting and waving its trunk around. Not keen on being flattened by an African elephant, we politely reversed and took an alternative route.
Tsavo West
We didn’t see many animals here, but we were completely in awe of the lava landscape. We continued on to our next destination for the night: Lions Bluff Lodge. Our journey had already been amazing, but this place truly made it unforgettable. I think we don’t need to say much—let the photo speak for itself. When you think of Africa, this landscape is what comes to mind, right? And how incredible is it that we weren’t just looking at it through a photo or a travel show like 3 op Reis, but witnessing it with our own eyes?! We spent the whole time just walking around with huge smiles on our faces.
That same evening, we booked a night safari. Cosy together under a blanket in the jeep, we searched for the glowing eyes of predators. And there she was, right in the middle of the road—a stunning lioness, crouching as she eyed a herd of zebras. We got to observe her up close, as she was lying next to the car—it was such a special experience. The bush walk safari the next morning was equally incredible, walking through nature with a ranger, in the very spot where we had seen a lion just the day before.
Diani Beach
After 1.5 weeks of travelling around, it was time for our final destination: DIANI BEACH!!! We’ve seen quite a few countries, but this was truly a dream beach; palm trees, crystal-clear water, and powdery white sand. We stayed for 6 nights at Diani Blue and had the ultimate experience, enjoying the beautiful beach, delicious food, and incredibly friendly staff.
Looking back on this trip, we can confidently say that it was the honeymoon in Kenya we had imagined. If you're looking for adventure, delicious food, beautiful nature, kind people, excitement, wildlife, and white sandy beaches, don't hesitate—book your trip to Kenya! And if you’re not after all the points we’ve just mentioned, no worries—Charlie's Travels will tailor the perfect trip for you. A huge thank you to Charlie’s Travels; we will never forget our honeymoon!
Geraldine Kemper discovered beautiful Kenya with her boyfriend
"From vast hilly landscapes in Masaai land to the dry desert and hot springs at Magadi, staying with a Masaai family and sleeping in a tent among the wildlife, having breakfast with fresh pancakes in the morning sun and going to bed after a beer by the campfire, it was an unforgettable holiday within a holiday.
