The moment has arrived—you’re just 5 minutes away from landing at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport! But what can you actually expect when you step off the plane, bleary-eyed? Zoë has just landed and shares her experience in this blog post, so you’ll know exactly what awaits!

Arriving at the Airport

Karibu Kenya! After you’ve rubbed the sleep from your eyes, it’s time to find your way to the exit of Jomo Kenyatta Airport. Here’s a fun fact: Nairobi’s airport is named after Kenya’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta (1964–1978). Unlike Schiphol, where you walk through a jet bridge directly into the arrivals hall and are then lazily guided to a moving walkway with the additional reminder to ‘mind your step’, things are a little different here. This is where your off-the-beaten-track journey to Kenya begins! It works a bit differently. Follow the signs to immigration and, depending on whether or not you’ve arranged your visa in advance back home, you’ll need to join one of the queues! If you’re unsure which line to take, there are plenty of helpful staff members around to assist you.

Passport Control

If you’ve purchased your e-visa online and printed it out, you’ll probably be waiting by the luggage carousel a bit earlier than others. If you’ve opted for a visa on arrival, be sure to have 40 euros or 50 dollars in cash with you. There is an ATM, but don’t count on it working! Better safe than sorry!

Off on Your Adventure!

Now it’s just a matter of collecting your luggage, and you’re ready to dive into your adventure! If you’re travelling with us to Nairobi, someone should be waiting for you with a sign. There are airport taxis available, but opting for an Uber to your accommodation is cheaper and more reliable! Once you’re comfortably settled in the back seat, here’s some extra information about this vibrant city! Haven’t booked your trip to Africa yet? "From vast hilly landscapes in Masaai land to the dry desert and hot springs at Magadi, staying with a Masaai family and sleeping in a tent among the wildlife, having breakfast with fresh pancakes in the morning sun and going to bed after a beer by the campfire, it was an unforgettable holiday within a holiday.
