Charlie's Travels | Blog | Sharing is caring: 13x Best Instagram Spots in Africa

#1 Deadvlei, Namibia

The very famous Deadvlei ticks all the boxes for a stellar shot: a pearl-white clay pan, bright orange dunes, and a vivid blue sky. Hike up during sunrise to save yourself some sweat (and swearing), or aim for sunset to catch the golden hour. Either way, this spot will definitely be a hit!

#2 Drakensberg, South Africa

Drakensberg has an almost fairy-tale quality to it. Unsurprisingly, it was a major inspiration for Lord of the Rings. Lace up your hiking boots and ascend above the clouds, or saddle up on horseback and gallop through this magical region. Spectacular shots guaranteed!

#3 Zanzibar, Tanzania

The sprawling paradise beaches of Zanzibar have all the ingredients for a jealousy-inducing Instagram post. All you need to do here is slather on sunscreen, flip over, and snap away. For the perfect picture, hunt down hidden spots to avoid sharing the frame with hordes of tourists. TZ

#4 Lake Natron, Kenya

When the conditions are just right, thousands of flamingos gather at this lake to feast. The wide expanse of water slowly transforms into a massive pink explosion—a prime opportunity to snap some stunning photos. Strike a pose and say cheese!

#5 Lion’s Bluff, Kenya

What a way to wake up! Nestled in the wilderness, Lion’s Bluff is one of our favourite lodges. The sweeping landscape (with its vibrant colours) is photo-worthy on its own, but if you’re lucky, you might also catch some wildlife—and the towering Mount Kilimanjaro in the background.

#6 Blyde River Canyon, South Africa

Chances are you’ve already seen Blyde River Canyon pop up on your feed more than a few times. And for good reason—this is a prime example of #amazingview. Sure, it’s not exactly off the beaten track, but you’ll still walk away with some incredible snaps.

#7 Johannesburg, South Africa

Joburg is hip, urban, and artsy, particularly in the Maboneng district. Around every corner, you’ll stumble across stunning street art. A stroll through Maboneng is like visiting an open-air museum and will leave you with plenty of material for your feed.

#8 Amboseli, Kenya

Calling all elephant lovers! This is your ultimate Instagram spot. Amboseli National Park is home to countless elephant families, and with the magnificent Kilimanjaro as the backdrop, it’s one of Kenya’s best photo locations. Dust yourself off and start shooting!

#9 Baobab Avenue, Madagascar

Without a doubt, this is Madagascar’s most stunning street. The towering, peculiar baobab trees make it the ideal spot for a unique snap. The best time for a photo? Sunset, when the sky turns a rich shade of red.

#10 Lake Mutanda, Uganda

Possibly one of Uganda’s most beautiful spots, the glassy surface of Lake Mutanda looks like it belongs in a painting. Surrounded by dormant volcanoes, it’s pure magic, especially when mist hovers above the water. Smileeee!

#11 Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

The Danakil Depression is intensely dry and scorching hot. Forget trying to avoid a sweaty upper lip in your pics, but don’t worry—the surreal, otherworldly landscape will steal the show. It feels like you’ve landed on the moon, and you’ll have to pinch yourself to believe it’s real.

#12 Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana

Once a massive lake, this vast salt pan now makes for spectacular photos. The flat terrain plays tricks on perspective, allowing you to take some hilarious shots. Be warned, though—during the hot season, you’ll be wiping sweat off your forehead, so keep a bit of distance from the camera!

#13 Ilha de Moçambique, Mozambique

A tiny slice of Portugal in Africa, this island off the Mozambican coast oozes charm thanks to its Portuguese heritage. A little weathered but dripping with romance, the old white buildings stand out beautifully against the crystal-clear blue waters. Time for a photo! Or two, or three...
Ticking off all these spots on a single trip might be a stretch. But no matter where you go in Africa, you’ll find amazing wildlife, stunning landscapes, and incredible views. Start crossing them off your list!
