In September 2019, we embarked on a remarkable 2.5-week journey through Tanzania. The preparations with Charlie’s Travels went smoothly—we were looking for an adventurous and varied trip that combined both relaxation and action, with plenty of safaris. Additionally, we didn’t want to organise too much ourselves. In short, it was a trip fully tailored to our wishes and needs.
The initial contact with Danique was great from the very start. She sent us various options and, most importantly, asked detailed questions to understand exactly what we were looking for. She then took the time to research everything, and after a few FaceTime calls, the trip was all set. It also helped tremendously that she speaks Dutch, lives in Tanzania, and knows the country well, including many beautiful hidden spots.
Impressive and Diverse
The trip was absolutely fantastic. Tanzania is a stunning, diverse, and impressive country—vast in size, home to kind and helpful people, and able to meet all your travel desires. We flew into Kilimanjaro Airport, where, after a smooth flight, we had some time to settle in Moshi—a charming and cosy little town near the airport. From there, we took a local bus (everything was well organised) eastward to the Usambara Mountains. There, we embarked on a three-day hike with our wonderful and knowledgeable guide, Raymond. This was the perfect combination of exploring the country, experiencing local life, learning more about Tanzania, and staying active. During the hike, we stayed in a variety of unique places—from a stunning mountain peak to a convent with nuns. Absolutely magical!
Self drive in Tanzania
After the Usambara Mountains, we took the bus westward and stopped in Arusha, where the safari portion of our journey began. For the adventure—and to keep costs in check—we opted for a self-drive safari through several national parks, including Arusha, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire National Park. And yes, even this was possible! After exploring Tarangire National Park, our car was picked up, and we continued with a fantastic guide towards Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. These safari days were truly unforgettable—from driving through the parks ourselves and witnessing incredible wildlife sightings to experiencing the vast landscapes on a self-drive adventure. We slept under the starry sky, in tents, and even in luxurious lodges, with plenty of time to relax by the pool. It was the perfect balance—we had everything we wanted! After our days in the parks, we spent two more days in Arusha to unwind and reflect on all the beauty we had seen. We mostly relaxed by the pool and enjoyed delicious meals out—an ideal way to end our trip.
Travelling with Charlie’s Travels
Travelling with Charlie’s Travels was an incredibly special and enjoyable experience. The fact that we had direct contact with a Dutch travel expert living in Tanzania, who knows the country inside out, made everything so much easier. On top of that, we were constantly in touch with warm and welcoming locals, which made the trip even more authentic. They know exactly how to organise things, who is reliable, and what’s important for our style of travel—all backed by their extensive experience. In short, we would highly recommend travelling with and through Charlie’s Travels to anyone!
