Remote working in Kenya: why? In March, I had booked an amazing trip to Kenya for me and my group of 11 girls through Charlies Travels. Unfortunately, the trip was cancelled due to the coronavirus measures. While it was getting colder in the Netherlands and we were stuck in lockdown, I secretly began to dream […]

Since mid-October, I’ve been working remotely in Kenya. Say what?! After months of working full-time from home, I started looking for travel options. That’s how I ended up with Charlie’s Travels, and within two weeks, I was at Nairobi Airport. The plan was to stay in the Villa for two weeks, but after one week, I decided to stay longer. Why? Nairobi is buzzing! The city is much more modern than I expected.

It’s going really well!! I originally booked for 4 weeks, and now (halfway through) I’ve already decided to extend by at least one more week. Maybe I’ll even stay here until after New Year’s!

It’s 08:00 AM, to the second. The whistle blows one last time, and smoothly, we leave the station behind: the brand-new Madaraka Express departs right on time. There’s a reason for this: it’s not the Kenyans, but the Chinese who are behind this massive investment.

The Lunatic Express: a mad railroad cutting across Kenya

A blue locomotive numbered 9326 pulls a long passenger train along red dirt tracks under a cloudy sky in Kenya, with hills and construction materials in the background—a vivid scene of travelling through Africa.

About 130 years ago, medicine man Mogo wa’Kebiro made a mysterious prediction… He foresaw that the colonists would bring with them a gigantic iron snake, one with as many legs as a centipede. This snake would spew fire, and nothing would ever be the same again. Less than ten years later, in 1896, this prophecy came true. The British embarked on a colossal project: constructing a railway line cutting through the rugged interior of Kenya.

The ultimate hike from the north: Mount Ololokwe

Three people stand on a rocky cliff in Kenya, overlooking a vast, arid African landscape with distant mountains. Two wear casual clothing, while the third wears traditional attire and holds a spear, all gazing out as they travel under a partly cloudy sky.

Some people go on yoga retreats in Bali, while others immerse themselves in silence during a meditation workshop in India. What’s our way of clearing our heads and “reconnecting” with ourselves? A challenging hike in a beautiful African location! A prime example of this is climbing the sacred mountain Ololokwe, located in the northern Samburu area of Kenya. You’re guaranteed mental serenity at the breathtaking summit, but physical peace… not so much. With a little goat and a donkey, you’ll ascend with Samburu warriors, experiencing the sandy paths and steep sections of this sacred mountain. Admittedly, it’s a climb, but the view once you reach the top more than makes up for all the effort.

Stroping vs. hunger in Kenya

Elephants lie lifeless with bloodied mouths, their tusks violently removed. Poaching of elephants and rhinos remains a significant issue in Kenya. The insatiable demand for ivory from Asia drives many people to this illegal business, with devastating consequences for animal populations and biodiversity in the region.

Travel Story – Travelling with kids

Kenya, a country that was high on our wish list. Not only because it’s a beautiful country in so many different aspects: wildlife, savannah, vast natural landscapes, pristine beaches, and so much more. But especially because I was born there and spent my early years.
