Makgadikgadi salt pans expedition

Vast salt pans, endless horizons, and towering baobabs define the unique Makgadikgadi Pan Area. During the annual zebra migration, this landscape transforms into a true spectacle. Camp in the wilderness, witness breathtaking orange sunsets, and revel in the clearest starry skies.

Salt Pans, what?! You think you’re heading into the bush and deserts of Africa, and suddenly you find yourself standing in the middle of a vast salt flat! Around 10,000 years ago, Lake Makgadikgadi dried up, leaving behind one of the largest salt flats in the world: the Makgadikgadi Pans. During the rainy season (November – March), this is a fantastic place for a safari and wildlife spotting – but even outside this period, a visit is an incredible change of scenery on your journey!

Zebra migration

Around these salt flats, the vast grasslands serve as the perfect playground for zebras, wildebeest, and more. Since the terrain is so flat with few hiding spots, hunting is tough for lions and other predators, making it a relatively peaceful place. However, a bit of caution is still needed, as cheetahs thrive in this environment.

Twice a year, a great zebra migration takes place in Makgadikgadi. Around January and February, zebras arrive from the Okavango Delta, and by March and April, they make their way back. Driving through the park in these months, feeling the warm breeze through your open window, you can’t help but be struck by the sheer beauty of it all. Everywhere you look, zebras. Thousands of zebras. The park feels completely deserted, and you drive for miles without seeing another soul—just an endless sea of zebras.

Kubu Island

This rocky island, with its desolate plains dotted with towering baobab trees and cacti, has a true alien vibe… Are we even still on Earth? Be sure to bring your camera and tripod because, on a clear night, you can capture stunning shots of the Milky Way!

Kubu Island rises from the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi. In the Tswana language, its name means "the hippopotamus." Hard to imagine now, but hundreds of years ago, these hefty creatures used to float around here!

This magical land is scattered with rocks and mysterious baobab trees. With a guide, you can explore the ancient history of the bizarre Lekhubu rock formations (Lekhubu being the local name for Kubu Island) and learn more about the flora and fauna of the area.

Kubu Island is a unique destination in itself. It’s the perfect place to step out of your tent, lay your mattress under the open sky, and marvel at the endless starry night. An unforgettable spot to reconnect with nature before continuing your journey.

Back to the salt flats! One of the most epic and unique activities in all of Botswana is camping on these pans—completely in the middle of nowhere—surrounded by the most stunning sunset and starry sky you’ve ever seen.
