Taita Hills
Hidden between Tsavo East and Tsavo West, the Taita Hills surprise every traveler with untouched green landscapes and incredible views.
Where rolling green hills and rare birds create a paradise
The Taita Hills are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, one of Africa’s oldest mountain ranges. The area is home to unique plants, rare bird species and connects the savannas of Tsavo with the coastal plains. It’s a rare mix of landscape, culture and biodiversity. As you explore this region on foot, you wander through misty forests and visit traditional Taita villages. Sadly, only five percent of the original forest remains, but local projects are working hard to restore it. The Taita people themselves play a big role in that. With their deep traditions and spiritual customs, they still visit the ceremonial caves scattered throughout the hills.
Things to do around the Taita Hills
Together with Habel, our local partner in the Taita Hills, we’ve put together some of the best experiences this region has to offer.
Homestay
Of course, this homestay is with Habel. He’s been part of the Charlies Travels family since the very beginning and is one of our all time favorites. Habel and his wife welcome you into their home for one or two nights and show you what life here is really like. If you enjoy cooking, you can help prepare dinner. If you’d rather have a drink, join Habel for a cold beer at the local pub after dinner. The area is quiet and green, and in the morning you wake up not to traffic but to a rooster telling you it’s time to get up.
Hiking through the hills
With Habel as your guide you can hike as much as you want through the lush Taita Hills. You can go for a long day hike or climb several short but steep peaks across the region. If you prefer, hop on the back of a motorbike and ride from spot to spot while exploring everything the Taita Hills have to offer. The views are absolutely stunning and give you a sense of complete freedom. And if you’d rather take it slow, Habel can guide you on an easier route that’s just as beautiful.
