South Africa tips: These 5 stops you really have to make on the Panorama Route!
The Panorama Route is a must-see in South Africa! Touristy? Maybe. But the spectacular views, gorges and waterfalls make it worth the hype. Discover our five favorite stops along this breathtaking drive!
Not very off the beaten track, still a Charlie's favorite!
As mentioned, although this route does not really fit into the ‘off the beaten track’ category, it is still a much-traveled route for our travellers. The views are truly breathtaking and make you forget all the tourists. So, in our opinion, a good reason for an exception. And… you will drive past it anyway when driving from Greater Kruger to eSwatini.
#1 Prove that God exists: God’s window
Damaraland is also ideal for rhino tracking and with a bit of luck you can spot the rare black rhino here. Super impressive to see these big animals wandering around in the rugged landscape.
In any case, make sure you take enough time for each stop and that you bring comfortable shoes and enough water!
Why should you really stop at God’s window?
You probably already guessed it when we say that you get a view from heaven: the views are simply breathtaking. This is the perfect place to take some beautiful pictures and enjoy nature. The short walk to the viewpoint passes a rainforest, so during the walk there there is also a lot of beautiful things to admire. But make sure you wear sturdy walking shoes!
#2 Three Rondavels & Blyde River Canyon
The Three Rondavels are three huge round rock formations that resemble traditional African huts, called rondavels. They are part of the impressive Blyde River Canyon, which stretches over 26 kilometers and is the third largest canyon in the world. That doesn't sound too bad, right?
Why should you really stop at these units?
The view of the canyon and the Three Rondavels is so beautiful, we can't find the right words for it. This area offers a spectacular landscape that you won't find anywhere else in the world.
Visit this place in the early morning or late afternoon. The sunrise and sunset from this point are particularly beautiful!
#3 Back in time with Bourke's Luck Potholes
The Bourke's Luck Potholes were formed by thousands of years of water erosion. The waters of the Treur and Blyde rivers have gradually formed cylindrical rock formations and pools, resulting in spectacular scenery and a natural pool.
#4 Graskop Gorge
Graskop Gorge is a great place full of natural beauty, and the lift will gladly take you down a bit. Down there you will find walking paths, a waterfall and all kinds of plants and animals. Not only will you see this beautiful flora and fauna, you will also find all kinds of explanations about it on the signs that are spread along the route. Unique experience in itself!
For those who like to experience some adventure, this is the place to be. You can even take a zipline for some extra excitement. At the top of the gorge there is a café where you can relax with a cup of coffee and enjoy the beautiful view.
Voor wie graag wat avontuur beleeft, is dit dé plek. Je kunt zelfs een zipline pakken voor wat extra spanning. Bovenaan de kloof is er een café waar je kunt relaxen met een kop koffie en genieten van het mooie uitzicht.
#5 Beautiful waterfalls: Lisbon & Berlin Falls
There is always something magical about waterfalls, and these two are no exception. These two beautiful waterfalls are located close to each other and are definitely worth a visit. Lisbon Falls is the highest waterfall in the Mpumalanga province, at 94 meters. Berlin Falls is a little wider, but no less impressive, and falls into a picturesque pool.
The best layout for your stops on the Panorama Route
How you plan your day is of course up to you. But here is what we think is the best way to plan your day:
Drive to God's Window early in the morning. The sunrise is beautiful and since most people are still in bed at that time, it is also nice and quiet. Continue your adventure to the Three Rondavels and Blyde River Canyon. The afternoon is a perfect time to explore the beautiful landscapes and take some great photos. Here you can also make a great stop for a relaxing picnic lunch overlooking the canyon. After lunch it is time to explore Bourke's Luck Potholes. Put on your walking shoes and take the time to admire the fascinating geological formations. And if you still have energy left, take a short walk along the riverbank to breathe in some refreshing air.
Want a unique lunch experience? Then go for lunch at the Chubby Pig. Chill vibes and the babbling river as background noise while you enjoy a well-deserved lunch on your tree trunk chair.
