The Moroccan Coast: From Hipster Surf Villages to Magical Cities

No run-of-the-mill beach towns or polished resorts here. Instead, you'll find the Atlantic Ocean crashing against red cliffs, fishermen grilling their catch right on the beach, and dusty surf towns where the pace of life slows down. This is the Moroccan coast as we know it.

Discover Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean

If you think Morocco only consists of bustling imperial cities and dusty deserts, you haven't seen the Atlantic coast yet. We recently traveled along this coastline and came back with sand in our hair and a serious dose of energy.

Along this route, you won't find mass tourism, but a raw mix of active surf spots, sleepy fishing harbors, and encounters that stick with you. Whether you want to get lost in the blue-and-white medina of Essaouira, stroll barefoot through the surf village of Imsouane, or kitesurf between the Sahara dunes of Dakhla, the coast has its own, unique vibe. No frills, just a constant sea breeze and Moroccan mint tea that's always waiting for you.

Activities on the Moroccan Coast

Don't expect rigid schedules here, but rather days filled with action on the water, hanging out in rooftop bars, and evenings around the campfire with locals.

Tamraght & Taghazout: Surf, Yoga, and Rooftop Bars

Tamraght and Taghazout are only a ten-minute drive from each other, but they have completely different dynamics. Tamraght is a sleepy, relaxed hipster surf village. Our travel consultant, Sjoerd, explains the difference:

"The inside of Tamraght town is all cozy surf hostels and a bit of a hipster vibe. On the beach itself, you have large luxury resorts."

It’s the perfect spot if you’re looking for peace, healthy lunch spots, and good yoga studios. Taghazout, on the other hand, is a lot more energetic. Sjoerd adds:

"This is truly the social heart of the Moroccan surf coast. It’s super lively and bursting with cozy rooftop bars for a drink after surfing."

Fair warning: Are you looking for a luxury villa with a massive private pool? Then Taghazout might not be your spot. You come here for the social vibe, the surfing, and the buzz.

Imsouane: Barefoot and Hunting for the Longest Wave

For the true "surfers-only" vibe, drive on to Imsouane. This friendly fishing village is world-famous in the surf scene for its endless, calm waves that slowly roll into the bay.

Our travel consultant Sjoerd took a detour specifically to visit during his trip:

"I took a detour on purpose for Imsouane; it’s absolutely worth it. Wonderful, all hipsters walking around barefoot, surfboards everywhere, but also nice lunch spots."

In Imsouane, the tidal flow dictates the rhythm of the day. You buy fish straight from the boat, chill on the beach, and go to bed early. Don't expect wild nightlife here; that’s exactly why the atmosphere has remained so pure and untouched.

With Natacha, Tarek, and Hamid to our favorite: Essaouira

Essaouira is one of our absolute favorites on the coast. It’s a lot more relaxed and less pushy than the hectic city of Marrakesh. You can spend hours wandering through the blue-and-white alleys, eating fresh fish in the harbor, and sleeping in beautifully restored, hidden riads. Nearby is Sidi Kaouki, a rugged and windy surf spot where you can kitesurf, go quad biking, or gallop on horseback across the beach.

Our travel consultant Sjoerd doesn't mince words:

"Darn man, I really think it's a delightful little town! In fact, I think it might be one of my favorite places in all of Morocco. Why? It just has everything."

To truly get to know Essaouira, we take you on the road with our local friends Natacha and Tarek. This creative couple quickly makes you forget the tourist highlights. They organize experiences that let you dive a bit deeper into the local culture than just the typical tourist spots. These are super fun experiences that don't just show you something, but where you actually do and experience it yourself. Think of traditional weaving workshops or forging your own silver jewelry. But the real highlight is the expedition with their partner Hamid:

"You go on the back of donkeys to the house, it’s a laugh! Then hike to the beach, straight through a beautiful forest, after which you end up on a secret beach where there is actually no one else."

- Travel consultant Sjoerd

On that deserted beach, Hamid is already waiting with a fresh fish barbecue. You end the evening with the hypnotic sounds of Gnawa music and stories around the campfire, while the Atlantic Ocean rustles in the background.

Dakhla: Where the Immense Sahara Dunes Meet the Ocean

Way down in the south, where Morocco transitions into the Western Sahara, lies Dakhla. This is an extraordinary place: on one side the golden sand dunes of the desert, on the other the deep blue lagoon. Dakhla is a world-class kitesurf hotspot, but even for non-surfers, it's a bizarre adventure.

Here, you drive a 4x4 across the sand plains, eat super-fresh oysters right at the local farm, and sleep in comfortable tent camps under a clear starry sky. It's the ultimate 'off-the-beaten-track' finale for your Morocco trip.
