The Pristine and Cultural Heart of the Savannah

Northern Ghana offers a world of difference compared to the bustling south. Here you will meet traditional village life on the vast savannah, discover the rich culture of the Dagomba community, and come face-to-face with the wild animal kingdom.

Our local partner Walisu will show you everything that makes this environment so unique and the people so proud.

Full Tamale Experience with Walisu

Tamale is the bustling and cultural heart of Northern Ghana. Together with our guide Walisu, you will explore the vibrant market streets, discover local crafts, and taste the rich flavors of northern cuisine. Walisu will take you to the bustling tanneries and traditional fabric weaving workshops where the iconic Batakari is made.

You will also visit the art gallery of world-renowned artist Ibrahim Mahama and stop by a "Traditional Healer." If you like, you can wander the markets with Walisu to source ingredients for a local meal of your choice, which you will then prepare together in the evening!

Our travel consultant Emiel tips that a walk with Walisu is the best way to experience the hospitality of the Dagomba culture. You will not only learn about the history of the city, but you will also make real connections with local residents in a relaxed way.

Artisanal Shea Butter Workshop in a local village

Northern Ghana is known worldwide for the production of high-quality Shea Butter. During this inspiring activity, you will visit a traditional women's cooperative near Tamale. Guided by our local partner, you will learn step-by-step how the nuts are manually cracked, roasted, and processed into rich, organic skincare products.

It is a heartwarming and educational meeting that not only gives you insight into the daily lives of rural women but also directly contributes to the local economy of the community.

Safari in Mole National Park met Ranger Robert

Mole National Park is the largest and oldest wildlife reserve in Ghana. Accompanied by Ranger Robert, you will go on a spectacular walking safari through the vast savannah. Robert knows the park like the back of his hand and will safely lead you up close to wild elephants, antelopes, and baboons.

Honestly, Mole National Park is not as packed with wildlife as the parks in Southeast Africa, but it offers a great safari experience, away from the crowds. Fun detail: this is the cheapest safari option in all of Africa!

Our travel consultant Emiel got closer to elephants during his walking safari with Robert than ever before! Because you are on foot, you experience the wild nature and the tranquility of the park in an intensely pure way.

The Larabanga Mosque "Tourist Trap"

On the edge of Mole National Park lies the characteristic village of Larabanga, known for its ancient Sudano-Sahelian mosque from the fifteenth century. A fantastic cultural stop where you can admire the unique architecture and spirituality of Northern Ghana up close.

However, this attraction is a perfect example of how tourism can ruin a special place. The term "Tourist Trap" is, in our opinion, appropriate here. Guides arguing with each other and pulling at your sleeve, so-called "voluntary donations" that feel more like forced payments, and very minimal information about the Mosque itself. A pity.

You are welcome to stop by, but don't have too high expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions about Northern Ghana

What is the best time to visit Northern Ghana?

The best time to visit Northern Ghana is during the dry season from November to March. The roads are accessible, and the drier landscape makes spotting wildlife in Mole National Park easier around the waterholes.

Is a walking safari in Mole National Park safe?

Yes, walking safaris are always guided by experienced and armed rangers like Ranger Robert. They know the behavior of the animals inside out and ensure a safe, controlled, and respectful distance.

What is the best way to travel from the south to Northern Ghana?

The most comfortable and fast way is a short domestic flight from Accra to Tamale. Travelers who want to see more of the country can simply drive through all of Ghana with a driver-guide.

What should I wear in this northern Islamic part of Ghana to avoid looking like a sloppy tourist?

We recommend light, breathable clothing. Bring a sun hat, sunglasses, and sturdy walking shoes for walking safaris and village tours.

Which local dishes must you try in the north?

You absolutely must try Tuo Zaafi (TZ), a traditional corn or cassava dough dish served with a spicy leafy vegetable soup, and fresh grilled Suya skewers from the local market.
