Kigali

Unlike any other African city. Clean, sustainability-focused, and impossible to sit still. A vibrant art scene, colourful markets, and amazing people.

The modern capital of Rwanda

Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, is also one of the cleanest cities in Africa! As one of the oldest cities in the country, it was founded by Richard Kandt during German rule and has always played a significant role. However, it wasn't until Rwanda's independence in 1962 that Kigali became the capital, thanks to its favourable central location. Despite its tragic past, under President Paul Kagame's leadership, the country has transformed into a nation aiming to become the "new Singapore" on a business level!

Versatile Kigali

A central hub, ready to attract new business. Economic growth, better healthcare, gender equality… Rwanda is on the rise! And this is especially evident in Kigali. Alongside the colourful and vibrant African atmosphere, the city boasts towering office buildings, large shopping centres, a fantastic modern conference centre, and luxurious hotels. The city is stunningly beautiful, exceptionally clean, and plastic is banned—so make sure to leave your plastic bags at home! On the last Saturday of the month, you might as well leave your car behind too, as it's a nationwide clean-up and car-free day. You've never seen a city this spotless!

Kigali is a city of many faces. While it showcases modernity, it also carries the weight of the country’s painful history. Visit the Presidential Palace, where President Juvénal Habyarimana lived until his death in 1994. Here, you’ll learn more about the genocide that began after the plane crash carrying Habyarimana and Cyprien Ntaryamira, the then-president of neighbouring Burundi. The wreckage of the aircraft can still be found in the palace’s garden. You can also explore all the rooms, which seem to have been suddenly abandoned, as if frozen in time.

Art is hip

But on a brighter note, this city is a true art hub! You’ll find vibrant markets filled with stunning African art. Check out the Kigali Center for Photography for an incredible collection of photo art, or head to the Inema Arts Center, where every Thursday you can enjoy happy hour with cocktails, great conversations, and a chilled-out DJ.

For beautiful souvenirs, visit the Caplaki Crafts Village, a market packed with stalls full of stunning baskets, sculptures, and masks that will look perfect back home. Have you already picked up enough souvenirs for your friends and family? Then end your day with a refreshing G&T at the 1000 Hills Distillery while watching the sunset. Kigali: a trendy, modern city you definitely don’t want to miss on your journey through Rwanda!
