Chefchaouen & the Rif Mountains: Beyond the Blue City

Explore Chefchaouen independently and hike through the rugged Rif Mountains. Sleep at Mostafa’s home, make goat cheese, and avoid the tourist crowds.

The Part of Morocco Where Time Stands Still and the Mountain Air Smells of Wild Herbs

Chefchaouen is known as the blue pearl of Morocco, but the real North Moroccan life only begins when you put your camera away and leave the famous photo stops behind.

Our travel consultant Sjoerd advises:

"Feel free to ignore those city guides and just wander. The Rif Mountains rising behind the city are raw, green, and home to an ancient Berber culture that remains completely untouched."

Outside the city, together with our local partner Mostafa, we have created an experience where you don't just observe, but truly participate in mountain life.

Activities in Chefchaouen & the Rif Mountains

Leave the tourist highlights behind and experience the north of Morocco through the eyes of the locals.

Getting Lost in Chefchaouen (No Guide Needed!)

Forget the tightly planned tours and pushy guides who want to show you the way. Chefchaouen is a city you have to feel, and the best way to do that is to get completely lost. Walk at your own pace through the labyrinthine, blue-washed alleys of the medina.

Walk through the side streets far away from the famous Instagram walls. It's so relaxed here. You hear children playing, the smell of freshly baked khobz (bread) greets you, and you take a seat on a plastic chair at a tiny cafe for an ice-cold mint tea. My tip: just walk uphill until you don't see any more tourists. That’s where the real blue Chefchaouen begins."

Homestay with Mostafa & Moroccan Cooking Class

Welcome to the home of Mostafa and his family! This is not a sterile hotel, but a warm and hospitable Moroccan home in a small mountain village. You join the family and learn the fine points of traditional North Moroccan cuisine during an intieme cooking class.

“We just finished making a gigantic tagine with his wife. She taught me how to get that deep, rich flavour using the right ratio of cumin, ginger, and a pinch of saffron. While that thing is simmering on the fire, we drink tea and talk with hands and feet. This is so incredibly pure."

Trekking through the Rugged Rif Mountains

The Rif Mountains are a side of Morocco that most travellers completely miss. Guided by our local guide Mostafa, who knows these mountains like the back of his hand, you trek through a landscape of deep gorges, dramatic limestone cliffs, and hidden valleys. Our travel consultant Sjoerd described it as "rugged, adventurous, and wonderfully quiet."

You hike along ancient mule tracks from village to village, far away from civilization. There is no mass tourism here; only the sound of goat bells, the scent of wild thyme under your hiking boots, and sweeping views that prove Morocco is so much more than just desert and sand.

Local Crafts: Goat Cheese Making & Beekeepers Visits

The residents of the Rif Mountains carefully preserve their ancient traditions. During this activity, you dive into their daily crafts. You visit a small farm in the hills where you work alongside the local female farmers to make fresh goat cheese (Jben). You learn how they press the creamy goat milk into traditional hand-woven reed molds.

"We just got our hands in the fresh goat cheese at a farming family's home. It’s truly fantastic to see how they have been doing it the exact same way for centuries here. Afterward, we walked to a beekeeper who keeps his hives high on the slopes. That honey... it's incredible. It tastes super strong of wild thyme and rosemary. You really have to taste this."

Wandering through Talassemtane National Park

For those who want to venture deeper into the Moroccan wilderness, Talassemtane National Park is the place. This protected nature reserve is known for its impressive forests of the rare Moroccan fir, deep valleys, and rushing waterfalls. Together with our guide, you leave the beaten path and walk through a green mountain landscape where, with a bit of luck, you might spot wild Barbary apes (macaques) rustling in the treetops. Whether you choose a challenging day trip over the ridges or a relaxing walk along the babbling river, here you experience the rugged, quiet side of the north.
