Morocco

Forget the clichés about flying carpets and over-touristy souks. Morocco is raw, surprisingly untamed, and less than a four-hour flight away. Whether you have a week for a quick, budget-friendly road trip with friends, or want to explore the emptiness of the desert with your partner: this is the culture shock you’re looking for, without the premium price tag.

Why is Morocco the perfect country for you as a traveler?

If we've learned one thing during our own travels through Morocco, it’s that this country surprises you completely from the very first kilometer.

One moment you are driving through a dry, arid plain, and the next you are steering through green hills that look just like Portugal or Spain. Then you climb through mountain passes that remind you of the Alps, only to drive into the Sahara and end up in red sand dunes that seem straight out of Namibia. That level of variety in such a relatively short trip is simply unprecedented.

We believe this is the ideal destination for those who want to go "off the beaten track" on a smaller budget. You will travel through spectacular mountain passes, meet nomads who still live according to ancient traditions, and end your trip on the rugged Atlantic coast where a relaxed surf culture reigns. By the way, a little bit of French will quickly help you out with local encounters along the way.

But what truly makes Morocco unforgettable are the people. You are not received here as a tourist, but as a guest. For example, our own Sjoerd participated in local family life during a unique homestay with Mustafa in the Rif Mountains. Pull up a chair for a warm glass of fresh mint tea and experience it yourself.

Discovering Morocco with our local partners

At Charlie’s Travels, we believe that you only truly get to know a country through the eyes of the people who live there. No anonymous resorts, but small-scale places run by local heroes we know personally. Mostafa, Hamid, Ali, and Mustapha are our eyes and ears on the ground, and they know exactly what your trip to Morocco needs to be truly experienced.

They open doors that remain closed to normal travelers and introduce you to the real Moroccan life.

Unique experiences in Morocco

Leave the standard highlights behind and choose the raw culture and active adventure we have mapped out for you:

  • Staying with Mostafa in the Rif Mountains: Stay with Mostafa and his family on their farm outside Chefchaouen and take part in traditional mountain life for a day.
  • Making goat cheese and visiting beekeepers: Learn how to press creamy goat cheese (Jben) into woven wicker baskets and taste fresh honey that tastes like wild thyme.
  • Ali's 200-year-old Kasbah in the Ziz Valley: Ali is single-handedly restoring an ancient mud-brick fort and will take you to visit date farmers and ingenious irrigation systems in his oasis.
  • Motorbike motocross with Mustapha in the M'Goun Valley: Ride pillion on a motorbike over unpaved gravel roads to spots in the valley where regular cars simply cannot go.
  • Hiking with nomads in the High Atlas: Trek for days with nomads and their herds, set up your tent under an insane starry sky, and let the donkeys carry your luggage.
  • Creative culture workshops in Essaouira: Meet artists and learn traditional carpet weaving or smithing silver jewelry.
  • Donkey trek to a secret beach with Hamid: Ride a donkey through the forests to a deserted beach near Essaouira for a fresh fish barbecue and live Gnawa music.
Nature parks without the crowds in Morocco

Whoever thinks you can only find a safari vibe in East or Southern Africa hasn't explored the Sahara of Morocco yet. During our off-road 4x4 crossing from M'hamid to Foum Zguid, you will experience the real, untouched emptiness of the desert and have a chance to spot the rare Addax.

Besides the vast desert plains, we recommend these three beautiful national parks to avoid the mass tourist crowds:

  • Talassemtane National Park: A green mountain area in the Rif with dense cedar forests, waterfalls, and wild Barbary macaque monkeys.
  • Souss-Massa National Park: A varied coastal park south of Agadir, known for rare bald ibises, flamingo's, and wild gazelles.
  • Iriqui National Park: A dry salt lake that turns into a temporary marsh in winter, full of migratory birds, ostriches, and fennecs (desert foxes).
Who is Morocco suitable for?

  1. Groups of friends & "Lustrum" trips (Our absolute favorite)
Morocco is the ultimate destination for a legendary university trip or an epic trip with friends. Why? Because of the perfect mix of action and relaxation. During the day, you can go off-roading in a 4x4 or ride pillion on a motorbike through the mountains and desert, and in the evening, you drink a cold beer on the relaxed surf coast of Taghazout or Essaouira. And the best part: such a road trip can be done in just 7 days. Ideal if you are looking for a shorter trip with a tighter budget, without compromising on adventure.

  2. Lovebirds & Couples
Wandering together through the courtyards of an atmospheric, hidden riad, dining by candlelight on a rooftop terrace overlooking the medina, and falling asleep under an overwhelming starry sky in the desert. Morocco is intimate, adventurous, and incredibly romantic.
  3. Adventurous families with (young) children
People often think Morocco is too intense with young children, but nothing could be further from the truth. The roads are good and the travel distances are surprisingly manageable. Our golden tip for families: skip the far northern town of Chefchaouen. This keeps travel distances short and relaxed, while you still fully enjoy the oases, the desert, and the beach. A perfect, stress-free adventure for the whole family.

  4. Roadtrip-junkies
Do you dream of driving for hours through constantly changing backdrops? Morocco offers an amazing scenery of deep canyons, red desert dunes, and snow-capped peaks. Here, you soak up culture and nature right from behind the wheel, over spectacular mountain passes and challenging gravel roads.
Best travel time for Morocco

Let's be honest: avoid July and August. You will melt away in the interior with temperatures that easily exceed 40°C. Morocco is the ultimate destination to escape the gloomy weather. Our favorite periods are the autumn break, winter break, and the spring break. Temperatures are a comfortable 20°C to 28°C, perfect for being active during the day and crawling around the campfire at night.

Not tied to school holidays? Cool! Then we recommend a round trip through Morocco in the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November)
