Livingstonia

This mountain town with panoramic views over Lake Malawi was once a mission post. Now it is a charming place full of nature, history and adventurous hikes to waterfalls and colonial buildings.

A touch of Scotland above Lake Malawi

Livingstonia lies high on the edge of a cliff with a view that makes you instantly forget there is no signal or maybe that is exactly what makes it so nice. Once founded by Scottish missionaries hence the name this mountain village breathes history mystery and a touch of nostalgia. You wander among colonial buildings, old schoolhouses and the iconic Stone House.

In the area you find waterfalls, steep cliffs and hikes your calves will talk about for weeks. The trek to Manchewe Falls, about one hundred twenty five metres of pure waterfall power is a must but getting lost for a day in the jungle with a local guide is an adventure in itself. Livingstonia is rough, remote and a bit quirky. Not a standard stop but certainly one you will brag about later.

Things to do in Livingstonia

Prepare yourself for an adventurous ride to this town high in the mountains with a spectacular view over Lake Malawi.

Mushroom Farm

This lodge deserves a mention because it has captured a very special place in our Charlie’s Travels heart. It offers everything we stand for and The Mushroom Farm does that to perfection. Apart from the American owners who speak the local language fluently and are fully integrated in the community, everyone who works for or with the Mushroom Farm is a local. All activities organised through the lodge are run directly by the local community without the lodge acting as middleman. The food and drinks are almost entirely grown in their own garden. The rooms and facilities such as showers and toilets are all built in a sustainable way.

Community feeling

When you join one of the hikes or activities from the Mushroom Farm you are not just a traveller on the road you become part of a bigger story. The tours are led by local guides who were born and raised here. They know every path every tree and every story attached to this place. Together with them you discover not only the nature but also the culture and the people who make this place so special. One hundred percent of the fee goes directly to your guide and contributes to sustainable income and opportunities within the community. Even your bath is lit by women from the village who bring their own wood and make sure you can bathe with the most incredible view.

Coffee tour

High in the mountains of Livingstonia lives Josh, a local with a serious passion for coffee and stories. Someone you will not forget quickly. From the Mushroom Farm hop on the back of a motorbike and race up into the hills passing viewpoints that take your breath away and trails only locals know.

Josh takes you to his own coffee farm where you learn everything about the process from berry to brew. You see how the beans are picked, dried roasted and of course tasted. Expect no tourist show but an honest educational and above all delicious experience. The tour lasts about six hours and ends with a fresh coffee tasting and a small roasting session. The result: A day full of aromas, flavours and stories.
