Chintheche

No busy resorts or crowded beaches but white sandy bays, gentle water and welcoming villages. In this paradise in Malawi you sleep by the water and enjoy the slow rhythm of local life.

Beach, peace and village rhythm

About forty kilometres south of Mzuzu lies Chintheche, a place where time seems to stand still. Perfect for anyone travelling from north to south along Lake Malawi and looking for a dose of calm, nature and genuine encounters with the locals. Do not expect busy beaches or tourist hotspots here. Chintheche is the relaxed undiscovered sister of Nkhata Bay. Wide sandy beaches, clear blue water and rows of palm trees create ultimate lake vibes. Here everything revolves around slow living, swimming in the lake, kayaking at sunset or simply walking barefoot along the shore while the village around you slowly comes to life. A place where simplicity and beauty go hand in hand and where you truly get that real Malawi feeling.

Things to do in Chintheche

A visit to Chintheche is calming and slow but that certainly does not mean it is boring.

Village walk

If you stay at Makuzi Beach Lodge it feels as if you are at the end of the world surrounded by calm, nature and the quiet water of Lake Malawi. But right here behind the lodge lies the small village of Bandawe where life flows at a different pace. Together with guide James you take a walk through the village and learn more about daily life at Makuzi Beach. James speaks proudly about his community and the Thonga culture, a Bantu people living in southern Mozambique, northeastern South Africa and also here in Malawi. The Thonga strongly believe in the power of their ancestors and gather under a large sacred tree to carry out rituals. James takes you to this special place and shares the stories that still surround it.

After the walk you are invited to join James’s family for a homemade lunch. His wife introduces you to local dishes such as nsima and cassava, freshly prepared with a generous amount of love. And if you want, you are welcome to help in the kitchen.

Cooking class

Food lovers listen up. This experience is all about eating, laughing and the pure flavours of Malawi. The day begins in the morning with a walk through the beautiful garden of chef Lara, the beating heart of her kitchen. As you stroll between fragrant herbs and colourful spices you pick the ingredients that later come to life in the cooking class. Then the lesson begins and Lara guides you step by step through her world. A real chatterbox that Lara. Together you prepare a fresh local and lovingly made three course menu from spicy curries to vanilla desserts. In the evening you take your seat at the chef’s table with a view over the calm lake and the sun slowly setting. A day you will want to recreate at home.
