Mount Meru
Skip Kilimanjaro, climb Mount Meru! This hidden gem in Tanzania offers breathtaking views, incredible wildlife spotting opportunities, and a challenging hike. Three of our colleagues took on the climb—read more about a hike up Mount Meru here!

Intense climb: the fifth-highest mountain in Africa
Mount Meru is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, so it’s no surprise that the trek to the summit takes four days and three nights. But these intense days will become some of the most unforgettable moments of your life! Read here to find out why!

And then… a good night’s sleep!
After an eventful first day, you can relax at Miriakamba Hut, located at 2,500 metres. From here, you’ll have an incredible viewpoint that makes it feel like the world is at your feet. On a clear day, you can even spot the breathtaking Kilimanjaro and the summit of Mount Meru.
The camps are simple but cosy—two lodges, each with twelve rooms where four people share a bunk-bed setup. A great place to chat, bond, and make new friends! You can also freshen up with the available washing facilities and use the toilets when nature calls. And let’s not forget the dining area, where delicious meals are served to refuel after such an intense day. Ready for that food coma? Sleep well!
Fun fact: This camp is your resting spot for both the first and third nights. That means when you meet other hikers, they are either just starting their adventure like you or returning from the summit—perfect conversation starters!

Day 3 – Reaching the summit of Mount Meru!
The alarm goes off just after midnight—it’s still dark, and you’ve probably had only a short night’s sleep. The early start is essential to reach the summit in time for sunrise. After breakfast, you do a final check of your gear and clothing layers. Together with your guide and a summit porter—there in case of emergencies or if someone needs to turn back—you begin the climb to the top. Breathing becomes more difficult as you ascend, so the pace is slow. Hiking in the dark feels entirely different; there are no views to admire, only the stunning starry sky above.
Climbing from peak to peak with chains
After some climbing and descending, you reach the rocky section where chains are in place to help you navigate over the rocks. Only at the very end of the hike do you finally see the true summit. All the peaks you pass along the way are not the peak. The one and only true summit is Socialist Peak, standing at 4,566 metres. The hike to the top takes around six hours, leading you through rocks, snow, sand, and eventually, breathtaking views. And then you realise why you started so early: the sun rises behind Kilimanjaro, treating you to a spectacular sight. As our colleague Lys put it: "I've never seen anything so beautiful in my life..."
And then… you’ve made it!
Congratulations, you’ve reached the summit! The guides serve some tea to keep you warm, allowing you to fully soak in the awe-inspiring views. It’s absolutely incredible! The descent follows the same route, but you can take your time. This time, you can truly enjoy the views, making it feel like a whole new journey. After a well-earned lunch at Saddle Hut, it’s time to continue the descent. This is the longest hiking day, and by the time you reach Miriakamba Hut, you’ll have 13 hours of hiking in your legs.
Day 4 – The descent begins
In the morning, the guides gently knock on your door again, just like the previous day. You’ve slept better at a lower altitude, with more oxygen and less cold. After breakfast, the ranger gathers all the groups again, and your journey towards the gate of Arusha National Park begins.
Final part of the hike: A refreshing shower under the waterfall
The terrain resembles that of the first day, with buffalo and other wildlife around you. Along the way, you’ll come across a refreshing waterfall where you can take a shower and admire the water cascading over the rocks. The final stretch of the hike is flatter and offers beautiful encounters with animals. At the second gate, the porters and the chef are waiting for you. Your driver is ready to take you back to Arusha town, while you take one last look at the breathtaking Arusha National Park and Mount Meru. You should be incredibly proud of yourself!
Climbing Mount Meru: what’s our conclusion?
An absolute challenge, but the reward is the unforgettable experience and the satisfaction of reaching the summit. In our opinion, climbing Mount Meru is a must for adrenaline junkies and hiking enthusiasts visiting Tanzania. So, lace up your hiking boots, grab your binoculars, and set off on an adventure! Don’t forget to bring your camera—you’ll want to capture these unforgettable moments. Want to know more? Feel free to send us an inquiry.
