Spitzkoppe

Spitzkoppe is a truly special place: massive rock formations rise out of nowhere in Namibia’s flat landscape. On these rocks, you can find ancient Bushmen paintings. Sleep under thousands of stars and wake up to the rising sun!

Spitzkoppe

One of Namibia’s lesser-known destinations, but absolutely stunning! The 700-metre granite peaks of Spitzkoppe rise high above the flat landscape and are over 120 million years old.

Some rocks have flat tops, making them perfect for a romantic night under the stars—just make sure to snuggle up in your sleeping bag because it gets chilly! Around 5 AM, you’ll see the sun rise while brewing a cup of instant coffee on your camping stove. I bet it’ll be one of the best cups of coffee you’ve ever had!

Climbing and Scrambling

Many a mountaineer will have the time of their life at this Matterhorn of Namibia. Here, you can take on stunning and challenging hikes and climbs, either on your own or guided by a local who can teach you all about this unique place. The area is home to ancient rock paintings and other archaeological finds—so at least you can tell your family that you did something educational on your holiday!

An added bonus: the proceeds from these hikes go directly to the local community that manages this stunning landscape.

You'll feel like the only person in the world here—just you and the stars. Well, almost. Because you’ll definitely have a visit from the Rock Hyrax. In Afrikaans, it's called a "Dassie," which makes perfect sense when you see one! These funny little creatures hop and scurry around the rocks, and believe it or not, their closest relative is the elephant (!). The tiny cousin!

Camping and stargazing

One of the highlights of your adventurous Namibia road trip is camping in the middle of nowhere, and the Spitzkoppe Campsite is one of the best. In this mountain oasis in the Namib Desert, adorned with massive boulders and hidden caves, you can camp in complete tranquillity. As residents of the Netherlands and Belgium, we often forget the otherworldly potential that stars embody. In Spitzkoppe, they stretch from horizon to horizon, shimmering in the dry air without any obstruction from light pollution.

Imagine this: the sunset paints a stunning backdrop across the clear sky, and the fascinating mountains glow red. You light the campfire and pop open that bottle of wine. As the stars appear, you hold your breath and realise—this is what freedom feels like.

Which accommodation suits you?

In Spitzkoppe, you can unwind from all your adventures in a stylish lodge. Charlie has thoroughly tested this lodge, and you’ll find the footage at the bottom of the page. Take a dip in the pool and enjoy the stunning view!

Prefer to be more at one with nature? Stay at one of Namibia’s most beautiful campsites. It’s an incredible experience to lay your mat on the flat rock at the very end of the campsite—sleeping under thousands of stars and waking up to the rising sun! That’s a truly special way to wake up. 🙂
