Kruger National Park

The oldest park in Africa and one of the largest game reserves in the world! A must-see for nature lovers with the abundance of birdlife and, of course, the Big Five roaming peacefully through the park.

A must see!

The Kruger National Park is 380 km long and 60 km wide, making it one of the largest game reserves in the world! Located in the northeastern part of South Africa, the park can be visited by car. With the Big Five casually wandering through, this park is a haven for nature lovers and a must-see!

It is also the oldest park in Africa. Kruger National Park was established by Paul Kruger, the president of Transvaal, in 1898. He realised in 1884 that the animals needed protection and arranged for the area between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers to be restricted from hunting. His full plan was carried out in 1898, when the Sabie Game Reserve was established. Later, it became known as Kruger National Park.

Why go to Kruger National Park?

It’s a special park, home to around 12,000 elephants, making Kruger National Park the place with the largest population of African elephants! In addition, there are remarkable trees and plants, 148 species of mammals, and an incredible number of birds! Kruger National Park is home to so many animal species that it has the greatest variety of wildlife in all of Africa! The landscape in the park is also varied, with green hills, mountains, savannah plains, and tropical forests.

As Kruger National Park is the most famous wildlife park in South Africa and attracts a lot of visitors, it offers a wide range of accommodations. Something for everyone! You can stay in basic accommodation within the park, luxury lodges in a private game reserve, or camp in the bush. Be sure to check out our unique experience in Greater Kruger, where you’ll camp with a guide in the Guernsey Private Nature Reserve, amazing!

Self-drive in Kruger National Park

What makes Kruger National Park extra special is its accessibility: you can leisurely drive through the park at your own pace and spot the animals. A great way to explore the park is by camping. Load up your car with cold beer and snacks, fire up the "braai" (South African BBQ), and enjoy the experience at one of the bush campsites or tented camps. All this with a view of one of the many rivers, wild animals, and at night, the incredible starry sky! Prefer not to drive around alone? You can also spot wildlife with the guidance of a ranger during a walking safari or a nocturnal game drive.

Our routes

South Africa is, of course, enormous and offers countless beautiful places to discover. Take the Garden Route, for example. The most popular coastal route in South Africa. Absolutely stunning, but due to the sheer volume of tourism and because we truly want to focus on what we do best, we have chosen not to offer this route.

We focus on off the beaten track experiences and routes, away from mass tourism. We want to show our travellers the authentic side of South Africa as much as possible. In South Africa, we choose routes with relatively short travel distances, where you can enjoy safari, nature, tropical coast, and mountains. With a range of activities from unique hikes to stunning boat trips, from diving to zip-lining and horseback riding, and as the cherry on top, culture as well! That’s why we’ve focused on two regions: the true off the beaten track Western Cape and The Eastern Loop! This way, you can fully enjoy the beauty South Africa has to offer.

Pssst... disclaimer!

A number of experiences from this article are part of the Garden Route, which we do not usually offer. Want to travel to South Africa with us? We’d love to brainstorm with you about alternative experiences that you can enjoy during your dream journey through the Western Cape or Eastern Loop.
