Isimangaliso Wetland National Park & St. Lucia

Discover the town of St. Lucia and get up close to wildlife in five distinct ecosystems: from tropical beaches and coral reefs to wetlands and savannah forests. iSimangaliso is one of the most diverse parks in South Africa, offering something for everyone!

If you love variety and diversity, iSimangaliso Wetland National Park is a must-visit. Located in the eastern part of South Africa, in the KwaZulu-Natal region, right on the coast, this wetland park is a natural gem. In 1999, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, becoming the first South African park to earn this prestigious status. Spanning 260,000 hectares, this lush landscape has become one of South Africa's largest parks. What makes it truly unique is the peaceful coexistence of five different ecosystems, each with its own distinct wildlife and natural beauty. From coastal dunes to wetlands, grasslands, and savannahs, this park offers an unparalleled experience for nature lovers.

Whether you’re into birdwatching, boat tours, or simply soaking up the beauty of the landscape, this park is a haven for nature lovers. With the chance to spot everything from hippos and crocodiles to dolphins and various species of antelope, it's a truly unforgettable experience.

The five ecosystems

So what exactly are these five ecosystems? Well, one of them is the marine system, which includes vast sandy beaches, subtropical coral reefs, and underwater valleys. Then there’s the lush coastal ecosystem: massive, ancient dunes that make the Dutch sand dunes look a bit amateur, covered in grassland and trees. Plus, iSimangaliso Park is home to a mix of salt- and freshwater lakes and huge swamps with swamp forests. And, just to top it all off, if you’re not into soggy socks, you can also stroll through dry savannah woodlands.

Each ecosystem is different but they all coexist in this huge park, making it a really unique and diverse place to explore.

Endless possibilities!

Naturally, with so many diverse ecosystems, there are endless activities to enjoy in iSimangaliso Wetlands National Park. Whether you're into chilling on a beach holiday, you're in the right place! iSimangaliso boasts a coastline of 220 kilometers, stretching all the way from Maphelane to the border with Mozambique. So, there’s no shortage of stunning beaches, and often, you’ll find they’re completely deserted – perfect for soaking up the sun without a care in the world!

Go on a boat

It's also a paradise for birdwatchers! The park is home to 526 bird species, including flamingos and pelicans. Many of these birds can be spotted during a boat ride. As you drift along Lake St. Lucia, you can get close to massive crocodiles and hippos. If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, why not brave the waters in a kayak? Paddle through the swamps, across St. Lucia Lake, and especially over Sibaya Lake – South Africa’s largest freshwater lake, separated from the Indian Ocean by just a lush dune. It's hard not to mistake the vast lake for the sea – the water is clear, blue, and surrounded by pristine white sand beaches!

Wildlife on land

Prefer staying on land? In iSimangaliso, you can go on a classic game drive, safari hat on your head and binoculars hanging around your neck. Here, you can tick off four of the Big Five, alongside zebras and giraffes! Can you spot the elephant, rhino, buffalo, or leopard? To get even closer to the animals, you can also do guided walks through the bush, with protection from a tough ranger. If you prefer tame, cuddly animals, you can opt to explore the landscape on horseback instead.

Life under water

Still not done playing? Don't worry; there's also a vibrant underwater world to explore. At iSimangaliso Wetlands National Park, you can enjoy top-notch scuba diving and snorkeling: admire colourful coral reefs or swim with water giants like the manta ray or whale shark. You can see massive whales from a boat: the humpback whale, which often swims around here, is quite the show-off, so there's a good chance of a spectacular display on a whale tour.

By the way, you can also see many other whale species here during the annual migration, when the giants travel from Antarctica to the warm, tropical waters of Mozambique and Madagascar to breed. Even on land, you can get up close to marine life. On a turtle tour, you can watch baby turtles make their first journey to the sea after hatching from eggs buried in the sand.

St. Lucia

When you say iSimangaliso, you say St. Lucia, as the two are inseparable. St. Lucia is a unique little town in the park, surrounded by water. Did you know that until recently, iSimangaliso was known as Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park? On one side of the town, you have the Indian Ocean, and on the other side, the river. There’s only one bridge that connects the town to the outside world.

When you stay in St. Lucia and are casually heading to the pub, don't be surprised if you see a large hippo strolling along the side of the road. St. Lucia has the largest hippo population in South Africa. And hippos aren’t just in the water, they often come over to say hello! Especially at night, when the temperature cools down, these several hundred-kilo mammals come out of the water to graze. The neatly trimmed grass in St. Lucia is one of their favourite snacks!

Adventure is great, but responsible travel is the most important! That's why we recommend that after sunset, you only travel by car. The animals may seem slow and lazy, but on land, they can run faster than you (up to 30 km/h!). It’s especially unwise to get between a hippo and the water. The animal may feel threatened, and even though they're vegetarians, they won't hesitate to try and bite you in half with their powerful jaws!
