Kosi Bay

Kosi Bay, a paradise for bird lovers! This reserve with lush nature and six lakes offers one of the best-preserved estuaries along the Indian coast. It is a beautiful area with lush nature full of animals and birds.

A corner of the Eastern Loop

With one leg in South Africa and one in Mozambique, you're at the very tip of the Elephant Coast. Against the Mozambique border, you'll find the beautiful town of Kosi Bay. A place that makes us at Charlie's Travels super happy. Despite its location in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a popular destination in the country, this area is by far the most remote destination we have in South Africa. Dare we call it one of the last untouched paradises in South Africa? Hell yes!

Enjoy this pristine part of the world while canoeing, fishing, swimming or cruising by boat through the complex canal system. Every year from November to February/March, a spectacular natural phenomenon happens here - the turtle nesting season! Ask your travel consultant about the possibilities.

A typical day in Kosi Bay

Your day consists of kayaking in the estuary, snorkelling in the estuary and a traditional Thonga fish corral tour, rounded off with a traditional fish fry with palm wine tasting. You can be sure that this will be the highlight of your stay in Kosi Bay!

You will meet a guide just after the wooden bridge on your way down to Kosi Bay Mouth. On arrival at the estuary shore, the guide will brief you on the kayaking part of the tour. You will be guided on double sea kayaks to the southern shore of the estuary where you will enter an incredibly surreal mangrove channel. Here on the mangrove islands, you get to see 5 different species of mangrove trees and, with any luck, the local mangrove kingfishers.

But there is also snorkelling! The snorkelling area at Kosi Bay Mouth is called ‘the aquarium’ for very good reasons. At rising tide, when crystal clear water from the warm Indian Ocean flows into the mouth, the visibility is incredible with amazing quantities of fish. The Kosi Bay ‘Aquarium’ is a declared and protected sanctuary where no fishing is allowed, making the calm clear waters perfect for wonderful snorkelling adventures.

Now it's time for the braai! The guides here will amaze you with their traditional cooking skills! Fresh fish is perfectly prepared on sharpened sticks next to a blazing fire. The fish is served on wild banana leaves with a delicious portion of corn bread and peanut soup. They also show you how own traditional Palm wine is harvested from a nearby wild date palm and you will have the opportunity to taste some freshly harvested juice without fermentation, as well as some well-fermented wine. Back to the modern world where your vehicle will bring you back to civilization
