Mount Suswa

A stunning motorbike ride with views of volcanoes, hidden lava caves, a hike to the crater and a visit to Masai Reuben and his particularly large family. Welcome to Mount Suswa!

Where is Mount Suswa located?

Mount Suswa is a 1.5-hour drive from Nairobi. Despite its proximity to the big city, this mountain really feels like a no man's land. No hike routes, no directional signs, no roads... This volcanic mountain is inhabited by a friendly Masai tribe who seek refuge on the vast plains surrounding the inner crater.

How do you get to the crater?

Hop on the back of a moped with these Masai warriors and start your trek towards Mount Suswa's crater. Don't worry, these men ride here every day. Along the way, stop at hidden lava caves, where a group of baboons gather every morning to go over the day. Much deeper into the cave, a giant, squeaky bat population lurks. Once you reach the top of the mountain, you can hike to the crater and take in the view from the giant Mount Suswa. Cruising yourself is also possible, of course!

Can you also sleep at Mount Suswa?

On the plateau between the inner and outer crater of Mount Suswa is the manyatta of one of our Masai friends, who is opening his household to our travellers. A manyatta is a settlement of a Masai clan or family. Apart from the particularly large family, you are also warmly welcomed by some roaming, friendly livestock. The evening ends with a feast, freshly prepared at the campfire. Under the starry sky hanging over Mount Suswa, you will enjoy the special and cultural welcome! Sleep in the manyatta, or pitch your own tent in camp. Sleep well!
