Namibia: 10 stunning accommodations!

The rooftop tent on your 4x4 is a great place to sleep, but sometimes a bit of extra romance or luxury is welcome. During your self-drive through Namibia, it's a good idea to plan your overnight stays, as the country is so vast that you might end up driving an extra 100 km if that one hotel is full. Don't worry, you can often crash on a mattress in the lobby, but having your own room is certainly nicer. Here are the 10 best places to stay in Namibia!

10. Vondelhof - Windhoek

For a sparkling start or a worthy finish to your Namibia adventure, this hostel is the place to be. Here, you can dive into a lovely large swimming pool, surrounded by stylish rooms radiating chill vibes. Vondelhof is run by none other than Yvonne – a little neurotic, but in the best way, and yes, she's a proud Dutchwoman. Yvonne has earned her stripes in Botswana and has a treasure trove of knowledge about Southern Africa. Add two daughters and three cats into the mix, and you have the perfect blend of warmth and charm. Vondelhof is located in downtown Windhoek – well, relatively speaking. The city is spacious, calm, and laid-back. Here, you can enjoy a nice meal and even explore a proper mall. It’s a city experience, though it feels like a cosy Tilburg – especially after weeks of desert adventure.

9. Spitzkoppe Community Restcamp - Spitzkoppe

Off the beaten track, a little pool, 1 km from Namibia’s 700-million-year-old ‘Matterhorn’. This is the geological dream of every nature lover who’s into minerals and granite pillars. Add in a whole bunch of yellow-black Weaverbirds, and you have a pretty good idea of this community. This is a campsite. So, no lodges here. The downside: the campers here are proud to be real campers, with a very high ‘outdoor’ vibe. Don’t trip over canvas hats and Teva sandals, but be wise and park your 4X4 so that you don’t have to interact with this responsible outdoor crowd. Plenty of space.

8. C’est Ci Bon Lodge - Otjiwarongo

This lodge features an African style and offers a pool, restaurant, and bar. It's a great spot to relax for a day after a long drive. Not quite special enough to stay for a week, though. You can visit the Cheetah Conservation Fund or use it as a base to head towards the Waterberg Plateau National Park from here.

7. Namtib Desert Lodge

A typical Namibian farm in the midst of the vast and endless Namibian desert. Namtib Desert Lodge is perfect for learning more about the desert, going on walks, and exploring the farm. There’s no pool or internet—just the beauty of nature and the friendly farm staff. This area is also home to quite a few Quiver Trees. These trees are named after the bark, which was once used by the Bushmen to make quivers for their arrows. In fact, Quiver Trees aren’t really trees at all but large succulents that can live up to 300 years. It’s a piece of human touch in the middle of an alien yet strangely beautiful landscape, left to the whims of the elements.

6. Waterberg Camp

Waterberg Plateau National Park owes its name to its water sources. This enchanting area captivates with sandstone rocks, ancient dinosaur footprints, and petrified sand dunes. Unlike many other parts of Namibia, the park boasts numerous natural water sources, making it a fertile oasis. Here, plants and animals thrive in abundant peace and luxury. Lucky visitors! Waterberg Camp underwent a complete facelift in 2007. Nestled at the foot of the cliffs of the Waterberg Plateau, the camp offers a simple kiosk and a shop with essentials such as beer, wine, and firewood. For meals, you can head to the historic Rasthaus, which has been around since 1908 and originally served as a police post.

5. Huab Lodge - Damaraland

Huab Lodge in Damaraland began as an idea to generate funds to save Namibia's desert elephants from poaching. Since 1992, awareness among the local population has significantly increased, and people now realise that the 'value' of the elephant as a tourist attraction is much more sustainable and friendly than simply killing the animal. Thankfully. The original farmland is a small, unique area called Monte Carlo, which offers a beautiful view over the dry Huab River. Huab Lodge is incredibly off the beaten track: it's peace and silence here. The people are very hospitable and really pamper you. It's often very quiet, and you may find yourself as the only guest in the lodge.

4. Zebra River Lodge

This place is truly heavenly! With a stunning pool, an excellent chef, and endless walking opportunities, it’s a real paradise. Even abseiling from giant cliffs is an option. Located in a remote spot, yes, but it’s worth it. And yes, it’s a bit pricey. But trust me, this experience will stay with you forever. While zebras trot across the slate stones scattered here, a captivating sound fills the air, reaching even your lodge during your afternoon relaxation. Occasionally, you’ll be startled by cheetahs hunting a baby zebra, and the tragic scene unfolds just as you enjoy your evening meal. Nature is tough, but it also evokes a deep sense of awe.

3. Savannah Guest Farm - Grunau

Amidst windmills and forgotten ruins stands Erich's farm, a peaceful retreat in the vast wilderness. Erich, a Namibian with German roots, welcomes you to his sheep farm. Here, simplicity is key. Choose from bedrooms in the old farmhouse, stables, or outbuildings. A modest apartment accommodates six. While self-catering is an option, the bed, dinner & breakfast choice is a wise one, as there’s nothing to be found in the surrounding area. The opportunities for exploration are endless; you can wander for hours without encountering a soul – just make sure you don’t get lost. The nearest petrol station and supermarket are 56 km away in the same village. The cattle graze on the savannah, while the cowboys and their families live on the edge of the land. During dry spells, they drive the herds hundreds of kilometres away to graze, like a scene from a western. Unfortunately, Erik doesn't have a website. You can reach him at PO Box 14, Grünau; tel/fax: 063 262070; email: savanna@iway.na.

2. Jackalberry Camp

This small camp with 4 lodges is located in the Nkasa Rupara National Park on the border with Botswana. Start your adventure here and then disappear into the wilderness. The lodges are nestled in the green plains and oases. Antelopes, elephants, and buffalo wander past as you enjoy your croissant in the morning. The beautiful lodges are powered entirely by solar energy; green water and electricity! Jackalberry Camp is fully self-sufficient. &WeLikeThat!

1. Stilz - Swakopmund

Swakopmund, the casino paradise, is buzzing with excitement. Get swept up – and perhaps your hard-earned holiday money – in the casinos, drink your courage at one of the bars, or dance the night away on the beach. For centuries, Swakopmund served as a haven for the elite. Since the discovery of uranium 120 km away, it has also become a base for workers, with a raw edge that matches this rugged cowboy state. Of course, you can book an Airbnb – they’re plentiful – or settle in at BackpackersHotel Swakopmund, where the vibe is lively. For a truly unique experience just outside Swakopmund, De Stilz offers a stay. These six stilted bungalows provide sea views and an overwhelming sea experience. Treat your loved one to an ultra-romantic, spacious floating bed and end the evening with a champagne breakfast in bed. Romance in the heart of Namibia's city of sin.
