The Aberdares

In this unbelievably green corner of Kenya you’ll be surrounded by misty forests and mountain views. Just three hours from Nairobi, you’ll find rare wildlife and endless tranquility far from the crowds.

A world of endless green and panoramic views

The Aberdares, or Aberdare Mountains, are a magical mountain range in central Kenya. Think cascading waterfalls, mist-covered forests and deep green valleys. Sitting at altitudes between 2000 and 4000 meters, this area is wetter and greener than most of Kenya’s parks. It’s the perfect place for travelers looking for a peaceful alpine escape deep in the wild, surrounded by mysterious animals and stunning landscapes.

Unlike Kenya’s famous savannas, the Aberdares are all about dense cloud forests and mountain panoramas. Bird lovers, culture seekers and adventure junkies will all find something here. And the best part? It’s only three hours from Nairobi and easy to combine with Mount Kenya or Ol Pejeta.

Things to do around the Aberdares

The Aberdares are every nature lover’s dream, offering the chance to slow down and fully immerse yourself in Kenya’s incredible biodiversity.

Aberdares National Park

Wide open moorlands and thick forests — that’s what defines Aberdares National Park. Expect endless mountain views, rolling hills and greenery as far as you can see. Many travelers skip this park chasing Kenya’s big game, but elephants and rhinos still roam here too. You can visit waterfalls, stay overnight at The Ark (a lodge with its own waterhole for elephants) or simply explore this unique ecosystem.

Gatamaiyu hike and tea plantations

If you’re after something less wild, the three hour hike along the Gatamaiyu River is a great choice. This laid back trail takes you past waterfalls and tea fields and gives you a taste of rural Kenyan life. You’ll learn how tea is picked and processed and can even share lunch or help cook with a local family. It’s a cozy and fun experience for all ages.

Mount Satima day hike

For those craving a challenge, the Mount Satima hike is a must. At 4001 meters, it’s often called the perfect warm up for Mount Kenya. The four hour trail takes you far off the beaten path through rugged highlands. Don’t worry, you start at around 3500 meters, so it’s not all uphill. Along the way you’ll enjoy 360 degree views and crisp mountain air. Just remember to bring a warm jacket for the top.

Elephant Hill day hike

About two hours from Nairobi you’ll find one of the most impressive rock formations in the Aberdares. As the name suggests, Elephant Hill looks just like an elephant’s back. The hike takes three to four hours and passes through an incredible range of landscapes. You’ll start in a dense alpine forest, move through a jungle-like stretch and end up in a dreamy bamboo forest that almost feels like Japan. On weekends it’s a popular hike for groups of friends, so don’t be surprised if you make a few new Kenyan friends at the summit while taking in the views.

Kereita Forest

Close to Nairobi and perfect for a family day out, Kereita Forest is packed with adrenaline. It’s home to the longest zipline in East Africa. Fly through the trees like Tarzan while monkeys watch in disbelief. Before the two point two kilometer ride you’ll get clear safety instructions and be accompanied by guides to make sure everyone glides safely from tree to tree.
