Dhow safari along tropical islands
A dhow is a traditional wooden sailing boat that you can hire with a skipper (and even a private chef if you wish!) to drift along the stunning coastline. On the uninhabited islands, you won’t find beach boys or crowds—just the soothing sound of waves and swaying palm trees.

The idyllic dhow
When exploring the eastern coasts of Africa along the Indian Ocean, you’ll undoubtedly spot a dhow sailing by at least once (or a hundred times). This is a traditional wooden sailing boat. The exact origins of the dhow are still debated among experts, but most agree that it emerged in India sometime between 600 years before and 600 years after the birth of baby Jesus. Nevertheless, the dhow is often described as an Arab sailing boat.
Regardless of its origins, it’s a sailing boat—and that means you can explore the ocean. Close your eyes and imagine: the gentle lapping of waves and the creaking of wood. A soft breeze caressing your face and filling the sails… The salty scent of the turquoise sea tickling your nose… As you open your eyes, you see vast, deserted sandbanks with palm trees swaying invitingly, beckoning you to rest in their shade. This is what a dhow safari in Mozambique looks like!

Island hopping
You can take a day trip by boat from the coastal town of Tofo. You'll sail to Pig Island, where around 900 people live in a small village, and you can sip fresh coconut milk on the pristine white beach. You'll also pass by Pansy, a sandbank where, at low tide, you can collect colourful shells and wave at friendly starfish.
Alternatively, you can set sail from the coastal town of Vilanculos. This route takes you to two islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago: Bazaruto – the largest island – and Ilha de Benguerra. The islands are home to little more than resorts, small communities, and idyllic white sandy beaches with wonderfully warm seawater. If you decide to linger a bit longer before getting back on the boat, you can also go horse riding or even swim with horses here. Imagine galloping along vast, sun-kissed beaches, your hair flowing in the wind, as the golden sunset casts a magical glow over the landscape.
If you love islands so much that you even want to start your island-hopping adventure from one, you can board a dhow from Ilha de Moçambique. This lively island is brimming with history, featuring stunning Portuguese architecture. From here, you can sail to Goa Island, where you’ll find little more than a single lighthouse.
Snorkelling and seafood
Does this all sound appealing, but you're nervously biting your nails because you don't actually know how to sail? No worries! An experienced captain will be on board to handle the sails and navigate the boat for you. Often, this captain is also a great cook, and if not, a chef will join to prepare a delicious, freshly caught meal for you! Grilled fish or other seafood, straight from the ocean onto your plate. And don’t forget to put on your snorkel mask during the trip—there are stunning snorkelling spots everywhere in the crystal-clear waters!
