How it begun

Charlie's Travels is THE travel agency for tailor-made, off the beaten track journeys in East and Southern Africa. With Dutch Africa experts, working directly from the continent, we make your adventure unique!

In memoriam - Charles Witlox

Sadly, Charles passed away in 2022, but his spirit lives on in everything we do. We all carry a piece of ‘Charlie’ in us. Our shared passion for travelling through Africa connects us. You can always wake us up for an adventurous road trip. We know our travelers personally and are committed to responsible travel, with respect for people, animals and nature. As true Africa experts, we strive to make a positive impact on this beautiful continent together with our travelers.

Falling in Love with Africa

Falling in Love with Africa Charles Witlox, our Charlie, fell head over heels in love with Kenya and knew immediately that he wanted to stay there. His explorer's spirit yearned for more  – there was so much more to discover! Alongside his adventures in the wild, he began organising safaris for expats and volunteers. His first friends and family also visited, and he showed them his Kenya: not the standard tourist attractions, but the REAL Kenya. They were all incredibly enthusiastic. That was the moment Charles decided: everyone should experience the authentic Africa – and thus Charlie's Travels was born.

Discovering and setting up

Charles spent two years travelling through East Africa on his motorcycle, from Kenya to Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. He got to know the countries inside out, made friends, formed partnerships, and mapped out new off-the-beaten-track routes that let travellers experience the real, pure, raw, colourful, and adventurous Africa.

2015

Jungle Villa

Travelers were super enthusiastic about this unique way of traveling, where you experience Africa with all your senses. Soon the news spread like wildfire – requests came flooding in and Charlie couldn't handle it alone anymore. Thus the Jungle Villa was born: a compound deep in the forests of Kenya, where our team lived and worked together, constantly dreaming up new adventures (we no longer live in this villa, but we still work there, and since 2024 in an even more beautiful variant). This is where the magic of Charlie's Travels started.

Positive impact

As a company, you have a social responsibility. We see fair business practices as the way forward! With off-the-beaten-track travel, we try to make a positive economic impact on local partners & communities. Don't lose sight of the cultural impact when exposing people to tourism for the first time: travel is a cultural exchange that works both ways. We compensate for all CO2 emissions from flights and transport by supporting local reforestation projects. How to conduct business in a good, sustainable way is an ongoing process for which people within the team have been made responsible for its development!

2018

From One-Man Business to 35 People

In just a few years, the company grew from a one-man operation to a team of 35 Africa fans, all driven by the passion to show the authentic beauty of Africa through our stories and self-developed routes!

Charles Witlox †

Charles Witlox was the founder behind our company Charlie's Travels. Many people know him as the adventurer who toured Africa on his motorcycle, always looking for new places for his future clients. He went for off-the-beaten-track adventures and made real connections with local people, so his clients could experience authentic Africa. Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Charles on December 29, 2022. His legacy lives on; we will always continue to carry out his goal and mission!

2022

The African continent has 54 countries and is incredibly diverse. Five years after establishing the Jungle Villa in Nairobi, we want to expand Charlie's Travels with work and travel hubs in all corners of the continent: North, East, South, West, and Central Africa. We continue our commitment to introducing people to the beauty of these different cultures and countries, and will always come up with new routes. We want to be and remain the #1 place when it comes to off-the-beaten-track travel through amazing Africa!
