Ecologically responsible travel
We believe in the reality of climate change and see its effects every day. But we still want to travel and enjoy our planet. Find out how you, as a traveller, can contribute to sustainability, from reducing CO2 emissions to minimising the use of plastic. We also share our own efforts to create a greener world.
An eco-friendly adventure in Africa
Your impact starts with your accommodation and transport: consider staying in eco-lodges or travelling by train where possible - sustainable and a great way to really explore a country. Also, don't choose the national parks where 30 cars line up to see a lion, choose the less visited places where you'll meet fewer tourists and still be able to see the Big 5. In this way, together we can maintain a viable environment for the animals, and by spreading out tourism, nature will remain more intact.
Reduce your CO2 emissions!
The biggest impact on the globe is your trip to the African continent. Flying is just not good for CO2 emissions, that's for sure. What's also certain is that you don't feel like walking to another continent (or do you, to each his own). What can make a small difference is if you opt for a direct flight. Flying to Africa with a stopover is cheaper, but much worse for the environment.
Use as little plastic as you can!
Plastic. It seems to be everywhere. It is a convenient, cheap and versatile product, but unfortunately not so friendly to Mother Nature. Plastic is one of the world's biggest polluters because it never decomposes and ends up in microscopic particles. Perhaps the problem is even greater in Africa because there is no proper waste management as we know it in Europe. So plastic lasts even longer than we are used to in Europe.
Fortunately, you can do your bit! Use as little single-use plastic as possible. For example, take your own water bottle and fill it up at a water ATM or in your accommodation, and always carry a reusable bag for small errands on the go. Still using plastic? Make sure it ends up in the bin.
We can help you reduce your CO2 emissions
To keep your carbon footprint as small as possible, we reduce your CO2 emissions. To do this, we work with a range of partners who share our commitment to a greener world.
For example, planting extra trees in coastal mangrove forests or investing in cookstoves that enable local people to cook in a sustainable way. We work with projects such as JustDiggit, Mikoko Pamoja and the Cookstoves Project, and we keep our eyes open for sustainable, beautiful collaborations.
We educate our partners
Ultimately, it is our amazing partners who meet you and have an impact on how sustainably you travel. That's why we make sure they are educated about sustainable living. Now we have to be honest, in Africa sometimes the options are limited. It is not always possible to have waste collected in remote areas. But we do our best to come up with creative solutions!
We also choose accommodation on the basis of sustainability. We look at how they separate waste, what they do with plastic and how they wash their bed linen. We are happy to present the sustainable options to you as a customer. All you have to do is choose!
