We definitely recommend Charlie’s Travels! They organised a great self-drive for us through South Africa, Mozambique and Eswatini. Communication before, during and after the trip was smooth: everything was very clear and they responded very quickly. We had a fantastic trip!
What a fantastic trip. If you love adventure, culture, and wildlife, then Charlie’s is the place for you. I was still savoring the experience long after the trip ended. Go for it, I would say—you don’t know what you’re missing!

Frequently asked questions
Do you have questions about a group trip to Africa? We would love to help you out! Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions to make your trip smooth and unforgettable.
How many people join a group trip?
We like to keep our groups small so we can continue to offer unique experiences. For this reason, both group trips have a maximum of 6 people.
Who joins these group trips?
You'll travel with other solo travelers. You can join the trip from age 20. Of course, we look at the registrations and will indicate what the group roughly looks like so you'll travel with like-minded people.
Are departure dates binding?
"Binding" remains a tricky concept. Of course, we try to proceed with the trips as planned, but we need at least 5 registrations. Once we reach this number, departure is guaranteed. If there's no departure guarantee yet, it's wise to still book through the booking form to secure your spot. As soon as the fifth person registers, we'll notify you that the trip is officially booked. If it becomes impossible to travel, we'll look together at the best alternative. This might not be in a group but individual. A big advantage is that we can customize everything, so there are always possibilities to make the trip happen.
Do you book flight tickets?
No, we don't book flight tickets ourselves. However, we work with an organization that can book tickets for you. The great thing about this organization is that they can hold tickets for a certain period. This way, you're not 100% committed to the tickets before your trip with us is confirmed.
I don't see accommodations in the program, where will we stay?
We'll let you know once you show interest in one of the trips. Of course, you can expect to stay in small-scale accommodations that are run by local people whenever possible.
Many group travel providers include many optional activities in the programme to make it look cheap. How does that work with you guys?
Our trips are arranged from A to Z, so almost all activities are included. Of course, we understand that you sometimes want some alone time, so occasionally, for the sake of freedom, we have a few optional activities. Activities that we believe should be included because they provide the best travel experience (almost everything!) are all inclusive!
Are meals included?
Meals are included where possible. A chef always travels with you to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Especially in remote locations, everything is arranged. In Nairobi and along the coast, fewer meals are included, but it's actually great fun to go into the city or villages and explore all the wonderful restaurants.
What kind of guide accompanies the trip?
We deliberately choose not to use Dutch tour guides. This is because we want to create local employment and avoid unnecessary flights. Additionally, local guides know the country and culture much better.
What about cancellation?
More information about our cancellation policy can be found here.
Are you insured?
Of course, you're insured against potential bankruptcy of Charlie's Travels. We work with 'Stichting Veilig Verzekerd Op Reis' (Safe Insured Travel Foundation). More information about this can be found on this page.
What about tipping?
How much should we give? It remains a tricky question. We've been here for a while and have plenty of experience with it, so we're happy to help. Before you travel, you'll receive a document with guidelines. It's good to know what's customary, so neither you nor the recipient feel taken advantage of. We want to emphasize that we give our staff and partners very fair salaries and they're not dependent on tips. However, in the hospitality industry (and specifically in many parts of Africa), it's very common to give a tip when the service is good. Want to know more about tipping? Check this article.
