Anyone traveling south from the High Atlas sees nothing but bone-dry, reddish-orange emptiness for hours. But then, as if someone carved a slice into the landscape with a knife, the Ziz Valley suddenly appears. This is one of North Africa's largest oases, where the Ziz River has carved a deep gorge, providing water to a lush, kilometer-long ribbon of millions of date palms.

Out with Ali: Walking along ancient irrigation canals
The best way to understand the Ziz Valley is on foot. Together with Ali, you trek deep into the palm oasis. Ali bought an old Kasbah in 2023 to restore it himself and keep the stories of his ancestors alive.
During a relaxed walk, he leads you along the gardens behind the nine-meter-high walls of the Kasbah. Here, 62 local families share the farmland. You discover how they fairly distribute the scarce water supply through an ingenious network of earthen channels to grow grains, olives, and figs. Ali takes you to the cliff edges, where you see the bright green strip contrast sharply with the dry desert around you.
Exploring ancient Kasbah forts and Ksour
The Ziz Valley is littered with historic Kasbahs (fortified homes) and Ksour (walled villages) made of pisé: a traditional mixture of mud, straw, and clay. Many of these impressive structures have since been partially reclaimed by nature, giving them a raw, almost ghostly atmosphere.

October tip: Climbing for the 'black gold'
Traveling in autumn (around October)? You're in for a treat. This is the time of the date harvest, the beating heart of the economy in the Ziz Valley. The valley is known for its world-famous Medjool dates.
No tourist show, but reality: you see athletic locals climbing meters high into the palms without any safety gear to harvest the heavy clusters. Together with Ali, you visit a local date farmer, lend a hand yourself, and taste the dates straight from the tree: soft, super sweet, and still warm from the sun.

- To the cliffs (Medium): A short, brisk climb for a panoramic view over the valley. Sturdy hiking boots with grip are required for this.
