The RN7 is the route where Madagascar puts its best cards on the table

Anyone reading up on Madagascar will come across the RN7 (Route Nationale 7). And don't get me wrong, that legendary route from north to south is insane and an absolute classic for a reason. But the way *how* you travel it makes all the difference here. While the masses hop on a large tour bus, we go local, authentic, and on-the-ground. The RN7 isn't just a route. It's a road trip right through the heart of one of the most extraordinary countries in the world.

One moment you're trudging through the dense, steamy rainforest of Ranomafana to spot the rare golden bamboo lemur with the help of local trackers. The next moment, we're steering the 4x4s through the bone-dry, otherworldly sandstone canyons of Isalo, where after an intense hike you take an ice-cold dip in a hidden, azure-blue oasis. And then there's the Tsaranoro Valley. You sit down on the floor for a local lunch at guide Tuwavne’s home and, at the end of the afternoon, kick a dusty ball with the locals as the sun sinks golden-red behind the granite giants. Via the lively markets of Ambalavao, you eventually descend to the tropical south coast to chat about the expedition over a carafe of local rum.

This route is the perfect first introduction to Madagascar. You’ll discover the island's most famous highlights without it ever feeling like a tourist attraction. If you want to understand why Madagascar is called the Eighth Continent, this is where you must start!

21 days in Madagaskar

Day 1

Antananarivo

Welcome to Madagascar! When you first land in Antananarivo, you suddenly find yourself in a completely different world. You're in Africa, but the many rice fields remind you of Asia, the people of Indonesia, the city center of an old European hub, and then suddenly grand avenues just like in France. Where are you? Africa? Asia? Europe? It all comes together here in this unique melting pot found nowhere else in the world.

Day 2 - 3

Antsirabe

You continue your way south through the highlands. The landscape is primarily characterized by mountains and fertile valleys. Once you arrive, Antsirabe feels like a fresh breath of air in the middle of the Malagasy highlands. The colorful pousse-pousses give the city a cheerful face, while the colonial houses and lively markets take you back to another time. In the city itself, you can get lost among artisans who polish gemstones, create miniature works of art, or transform zebu horn into unique souvenirs. But the surroundings are just as special: sparkling crater lakes like Lake Tritriva and Lake Andraikiba are just a stone's throw away and invite you for a short hike or picnic. Whether you choose a relaxed day in the city or a small adventure in nature, Antsirabe always shows its most colorful side.

Day 4 - 5

Ranomafana National Park

In the vast rainforest of Ranomafana, things get truly adventurous, with steep hills and rich biodiversity. The park is famous as the only location in the world where you can observe the Golden Bamboo Lemur in the wild. Together with your guide, you set off for a hike of 2 to 6 hours. The soundtrack of the day? The calls of lemurs high in the trees, birdsong from every corner, and the rustling of reptiles and frogs among the leaves. With a bit of luck, you'll spot one of the 12 species of lemurs that live here, or perhaps a colorful butterfly, rare bird, or a well-hidden little frog. It’s no wonder Ranomafana has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007. It’s a day of pure jungle vibes and unexpected encounters, right in the heart of Madagascar.

Day 6

Ambalavao

Among the imposing granite rocks of the south lies the Anjà Community Reserve: a small but special nature area, entirely managed by the local Betsileo community. Here you are almost guaranteed to spot the famous ring-tailed lemurs, sometimes from very close by, as they watch curiously or play in the trees. Together with a local guide, you head out for about 1.5 to 3 hours. The walk is easy to moderate, making it accessible for almost everyone. What makes this reserve extra special? It’s not an anonymous place, but a community project: the income goes directly back to the villagers who protect their nature. This way, you not only experience a unique encounter with Madagascar's most famous lemurs but also contribute to the conservation of their habitat.

Day 7 - 8

Tsaranoro

The Tsaranoro Valley is a complete off-the-grid paradise, dominated by a gigantic, Lion King-like rock wall. Where Isalo is mystical and grand, Tsaranoro is green, raw, and intensely hospitable. You'll have lunch here with our local friend Tuwavne, can hike Chameleon Peak for a beautiful 360-degree panoramic view, and play a dusty game of football against the locals as the sun sets over the valley.

Day 9 - 10

Isalo National Park

The hike through Isalo is a must-see adventure. You'll trek through deep canyons and past bizarre sandstone formations in search of hidden oases among the rocks. Along the way, our local partners Toussaint and Otilo will tell you about the sacred sites of the Bara tribe that you pass: hidden burial places in rock crevices, plants with medicinal powers, and the unique wildlife. A day full of nature, peace, and rugged beauty—exactly what Isalo is known for.

Day 11 - 13

Ifaty

Ah, and then it's time to wonderfully relax in Ifaty. This is one of those places where you effortlessly let the days glide by with the tempo set to full chill. Think of powder-white beaches, swaying palm trees, and the Indian Ocean always inviting you for a refreshing dip. Explore the colorful coral reefs while snorkeling, take an adventurous hike through the mysterious Spiny Forest, or simply plop down in a hammock with a cold drink in your hand. When you see the local fishermen in their wooden pirogues heading toward the horizon in the morning, you immediately feel that enchanting, relaxed rhythm this coastal village is famous for.

Day 14

Manja

From the relaxed coastal vibe in Ifaty, you slowly but surely head into the rugged and untouched southwest. As the turquoise horizon gives way to vast, dry plains, you’ll notice the tempo slowing down and life becoming purer. Manja is a lively, dusty trading town where you land right in the middle of the daily Malagasy rhythm, amidst colorful market stalls and local residents. A wonderful, raw stopover for travelers who look further and want to experience the real west coast of Madagascar.

Day 15 - 16

Belo Sur Mer

Experience the ultimate laid-back vibes on the raw west coast! Belo sur Mer is a typical fishing village where the pace is set to chill mode. Think: white sandy beaches, bright blue lagoons, and wooden pirogues quietly bobbing on the water. Wander through the village at your leisure, see how craftsmen passionately build traditional boats, or simply plop down with your towel for an afternoon in complete chill mode. Hungry for some action? Explore the colorful coral reefs while snorkeling or hop into a sailboat for a small adventure on the Indian Ocean.

Day 17 - 18

Morondava / Baobab Avenue

Located near Morondava, Baobab Avenue forms an iconic setting where time seems to stand still. You walk here along a dusty dirt road flanked by giant baobabs, some of which have dominated the horizon for over a millennium. Especially during sunset, when the sinking sun casts long shadows over the red earth, this place feels almost surreal. As you stroll along the path, you’ll learn from the locals about the mystical legends surrounding these 'upside-down trees' and discover the most beautiful handmade artworks in the nearby villages. It is a magical place that you simply have to see with your own eyes.

Day 19 - 20

Antananarivo

Back in Tana! After this long trip, the city feels like a warm welcome again. You swap the red, dusty tracks for the lively alleys and that unique cultural melting pot that characterizes the city. Close this legendary trip in style at the many cozy hotspots or score your last authentic souvenirs at the colorful local markets.
