Viphya Plateau

You walk here through vast pine forests and across deserted ridgelines where hardly any tourists come. The fresh mountain air and endless views make it a perfect destination in Malawi for anyone seeking silence and nature.

Mountain forests and endless silence

The Viphya Mountains also known as the Viphya Plateau lie in the north of central Malawi and form an elongated mountain range of more than two hundred kilometres. The area consists largely of high lying hills, forests and farmland with an average altitude of one thousand seven hundred to two thousand metres. But also a place where active work is being done on nature conservation. Local organisations and lodges work to protect the forest from deforestation and illegal logging and to restore indigenous tree species.

By staying here you support these initiatives directly, the income from eco tourism helps local communities manage their environment in a sustainable way. It is the ideal place for nature lovers and adventurers who enjoy hiking and exploring. Because of the pine forests, the rolling hills and the emptiness you almost imagine yourself in Scotland or Switzerland. It is actually a rather un-African destination which makes it interesting, fun and unique.

Things to do around the Viphya Plateau

The best way to explore Viphya is by hopping on a bike or into the saddle for an active adventure in the fresh mountain air. Ideal for the sporty ones among us.

Horse riding

On horseback in the green hills of the Viphya. You arrive at a self built stable hidden in the green heart of Malawi. This is where Maggie and Brian live, a remarkable couple who have lived in Malawi all their lives. They welcome you with open arms and probably with a few lovely stories about life here. Around their home about ten beautiful horses roam freely together with two huge but very friendly dogs slowly wandering around the yard. Together with your guide you head into the hills and through forests. Back at the stable Maggie waits with a cup of coffee and if you are lucky a freshly baked cookie. A bit like visiting your grandparents.

Mountain biking

Very Dutch, discovering the Viphya Forest Reserve on a bike of course. The trails are good and clear and the area is more than big enough for a beautiful loop and a full day of exploring. The lodges can help you with a nice route. Do not expect fancy e bikes or the newest carbon mountain bikes just a normal bike. That works perfectly fine and is more than enough for this accessible area with not too tough climbs.
