Mandatory Travel Insurance – Tanzania & Zanzibar

From July 1st, 2025, the Tanzanian government requires all non-resident international travelers to purchase mandatory local travel insurance upon arrival.

Tanzania insurance

Tanzania Mainland Insurance

  • Adults (18+): USD 44
  • Children (3–17): USD 22
  • Infants (Under 3): Free
  • Validity: 62 days

Please note: Even if you already have your own travel insurance, this local policy is still required.

Important: Card machines at borders or airports are not always reliable. We strongly recommend carrying cash in USD to avoid delays.

Zanzibar insurance (separate requirement)

Traveling to Zanzibar? You will need to purchase a separate insurance policy upon arrival on the island, even if you already paid for mainland Tanzania.

  • Adults (18+): USD 44
  • Children (3–17): USD 22
  • Infants (Under 3): Free
  • Validity: 62 days

This policy is distinct and not covered by the mainland insurance.

What should you do?

No stress – we’ll guide you through it.

  • The insurance must be purchased on arrival at the airport or land border.
  • It covers medical emergencies, evacuation, theft, baggage delays, and more
  • The Tanzanian government is exploring online pre-purchase options, but this is not yet confirmed.
  • Exemptions only apply to certain citizens (e.g., EAC or SADC); we’ll help you check if this applies.
