Shewula Mountain Camp
Shewula is run by the Swazi community and offers a panoramic view of the Lebombo Mountains. Discover the authentic Swazi culture, enjoy the breathtaking natural scenery, and immerse yourself in a truly enriching experience during an eye-opening village walk.
Discovering Swazi Culture
To truly get a sense of Swazi culture, you must head up the mountain to the Shewula Mountain Camp! This camp is run by the Swazi community, and they are happy to welcome you.
Swazi culture is a blend of European and African traditions. Traditional healers still play a vital role in the community. When someone falls ill, they will first visit a medicine man before turning to a Western doctor. The community has certain rituals, such as dancing, to honour its most important figures. Music is also played to support these various rituals and customs.
Multiple wives, as long as you can support them
In Swaziland, many traditions have remained unchanged, but Swazi culture is also evolving as external influences grow. Polygamy was once completely normal, and it was common for a man to have multiple wives.
Nowadays, this is becoming less common, with only a few men still having multiple wives. This is partly due to the increasing popularity of Christianity. The king, however, excels in this regard—he already has more than 15 wives and gains a new one each year!
The rituals and surroundings
These Swazi rituals, such as traditional dances, clothing, and jewellery, can be observed at Shewula Mountain Camp, along with the typical Swazi huts they live in. You'll also stay in beautiful African-style rondavels.
While you're here, take a hike through this stunning landscape—you might even spot some incredible wildlife! Or, if you're feeling adventurous, hop on a mountain bike and race through the area.
