Congo Nile Trail
Gisenyi is the starting point of the Congo Nile Trail. This trail runs from Gisenyi all the way to Lake Tanganyika in Burundi. Those 1,000 hills we keep mentioning? On this adventurous trek, you’ll climb nearly all of them. A must-do for the true adventurers among us!

View over Lake Kivu
Off the beaten path… this 4-5 day trip is a real challenge! You'll pass coffee and tea plantations, share a banana beer with the locals, spot monkeys jumping through the trees, and—best of all—enjoy stunning views over Lake Kivu. This is truly the best way to discover these incredibly beautiful, lush green hills.
The trail stretches 260 km, with three-quarters of the roads being dirt tracks, and the highest point reaching nearly 2,500 metres. This is no casual bike ride! You’ll cycle through breathtaking landscapes, stop at roadside stalls for a tasty snack, and even ask the local fishermen if they need a hand. Along the way, you'll be cheered on by villagers, with children calling out and people waving… It almost feels like you’re riding in the Tour de France!

Back to basics or luxury
And gradually, the roads improve significantly—yes, even here, the Chinese are hard at work enhancing the infrastructure. Before you know it, you're speeding down a newly paved stretch of road, descending from the hills. Along the route, there are various campsites, guesthouses, and lodges, so you can choose whether you want to go fully back to basics or enjoy a bit more luxury during this trek.
Not much of a cyclist? Feel like you've spent enough time on two wheels back home? No problem—you can also hike this trail! Think of it as a monster trek lasting 10 days, with nights spent in guesthouses or even camping. The REAL deal. In those 10 days, you'll experience an incredibly beautiful part of Rwanda while staying active. The Four Days Marches in Nijmegen? They don’t even come close! And certainly not as scenic!
Rwanda Trail for Everyone
If the thought of walking already gives you blisters, don’t worry. This trail is also for the less sporty! Hop on the back of a motorbike and enjoy this beautiful ride with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face! And if you don’t want to tackle the nearly 230 km journey of endless hills, you can always choose to do a shorter section. Travel from Gisenyi to Kibuye and stay a while by Lake Kivu, a stunning lake on the border of Rwanda and Congo. You’ll never get enough of this view!
