Looking for off the beaten track adventure
Join us on an unforgettable adventure with Charlie's Travels! Rwanda is a special country. Littering on the streets is prohibited, and you'll notice this immediately as you drive on a well-maintained highway towards your hotel in the capital, Kigali, in just under an hour. There is no litter to be seen, and as you look out of the car window, you'll notice that all motorcyclists wear helmets, and women carrying large bunches of matoke (a type of banana) on their heads walk on the sidewalk, not on the road. Time to explore more of Rwanda!

15 days in Rwanda

Arrival
As you step off the plane, the scent of charcoal greets you. A pleasantly warm temperature and the sound of tropical birds welcome you: welcome to Rwanda! The realisation that you have arrived in a special country actually begins even before you step off the plane: you are asked to leave plastic bags behind, as they are prohibited here!

Kigali
In downtown, you experience the hustle and bustle of daily life in Kigali. Markets filled with tropical fruits you've never heard of and steaming food stalls. A stark contrast to the peaceful streets atop the hills where you were earlier. A Rwandan football team, created for athletes with missing limbs, showcases their skills. These are the stars of the day! The tour concludes with a visit to the Genocide Memorial, a resting place for over 250,000 victims of the genocide.

Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park is perhaps Africa's best-kept secret! This undiscovered national park is located in the east of the country and is only separated from neighbouring Tanzania by the Akagera River. The park features a wide variety of landscapes and vegetation, from golden savannas with rolling grasslands to swamps, mountains, and stunning lakes. It’s truly a paradise for diverse wildlife, and today, it’s even home to the Big Five!

Lake Burera
In the northwest of Rwanda, near the border with Uganda and Volcanoes National Park, lies a mirror-like lake surrounded by lush green mountains and overshadowed by three mighty volcanoes. The deep lake was formed by volcanic activity, leaving six pieces of land in the middle. These six islands are as fertile and green as the surrounding mountains, and the local community knows how to make the most of this land. They serve up the most delicious matoke, cassava, pumpkin, and other Rwandan dishes, all without ever needing to visit the mainland.

Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park only gained widespread recognition when the zoologist Dian Fossey established her research centre here, nestled between the Visoke and Karisimbi volcanoes. From that point on, the park became a crucial base and playground for remarkable research on the rare mountain gorillas and the ongoing battle to protect our endangered relatives from poachers.

Gisenyi
Gisenyi, located on the shores of Lake Kivu, boasts three sandy beaches. For the active travellers, it's a great spot for water sports. Gisenyi sits atop lava formations from the eruptions of the nearby Nyiragongo volcano (years ago). With freshly grilled fish from the lake and a cold Rwandan beer at sunset, your day is complete!

Kibuye
The authentic town of Kibuye, now better known as Karongi, is still rarely visited by tourists. The town is surrounded by stunning hills, and beautiful peninsulas dot the lake. Lake Kivu, with a depth of 480 metres at its deepest point, is one of the deepest lakes in Africa. Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills, and when you're here, you completely understand why. The green hills with tea plantations flow down to the lake, and in the evening, the lights of the villages flicker like stars.

Nyungwe Forest National Park
One of the highlights in the unique Nyungwe Forest is a trek to visit our ‘cousins and cousins’: the chimpanzees. With the fascinating realization that 98% of our genes are identical to those of chimpanzees, you watch them with even more intrigue. In the morning, you follow the rangers through the forest, searching for these noisy primates by tracking broken branches, droppings, food remains, and sounds.

Departure
Everything must come to an end, including this beautiful adventure through Rwanda. Fully recharged, you pack your bags and head to the airport. With a healthy glow on your cheeks, you board the plane, recline your seat, and drift off into a dream, recalling all the incredible adventures you’ve experienced. Filled with inspiration and an abundance of beautiful memories, you open your front door. Untouched nature, lush wildlife, an inspiring population, and vibrant cities – you now have enough stories to share by the fireplace with your family and friends. Welcome home! One adventure is over, but you are richer in experiences.

Had a fantastic trip with Charlie’s Travels. Every little detail of the trip through Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya was thought through, making the trip flawless. A must for group travel!
My husband and I drove from Uganda to Rwanda and then on to Kenya. On several occasions, we were accompanied by a guide who spoke excellent English and was eager to share stories about their country or the places we visited. Five stars for Charlie’s!
We had an amazing trip through Uganda and Rwanda! Saw a lot of beautiful places, stayed in great hostels and lodges, did a lot of tours in stunning nature. It was absolutely great, and everything was arranged very well, with good (and kind) communication throughout the trip. 🙂
With eleven guests, we spent two weeks in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Thanks to their tremendous effort and creativity, we had an unforgettable trip. We also had a lot of fun with the traveling chef, drivers, and various guides. If you want to be surprised in Africa, give them a call!
“With Charlie’s Travels, we traveled through Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya with 13 girls. The trip was incredibly diverse, featuring motorcycle rides, swimming in volcanic lakes, eco-lodges, camping with locals, and relaxing on the most beautiful beaches. All I can say is: ‘Thank you, Charlie!'”
