Exploring Nyungwe area

Nyungwe, one of Central Africa’s oldest rainforests, is the perfect place to spot primates! With 13 species of primates and a rich tropical biodiversity, you’ll find unmatched nature and tranquility here. Step into the rainforest and discover a green world teeming with life.

Kitabi Inside Out

About 2 km from Nyungwe National Park lies Mount Kitabi. From Mount Kitabi, you have a view of the towering dark green trees in the distance and the light green tea plantations in the foreground. As you breathe in the fresh air, you walk with a guide—who can even distinguish grains of sand from each other—through the vast surroundings. Between the tea fields, hard work is underway to collect the perfect tea leaves, while Jack explains how the community operates. Slowly, you walk towards the edge of the National Park, home to 275 species of birds.

The misty rainforest is heaven on earth for these birds, but that doesn’t mean they always hide among the trees—those awarded to Nyungwe National Park. They regularly come to visit Kitabi to test your reflexes. They seem to calmly perch on one of the many leaves right in front of you but will flutter away just as easily when you pull out your camera. While you’re disappointed with your blurry close-up shot, the guide continues to share dozens of interesting facts and stories about the flora and fauna. For example: "eating crusts helps you whistle" or "roots are good for your eyes"—but in a more practical sense. Believe us, they have a whole list of useful tidbits ready! After this 2- to 3-hour walk, you’ll be certain—you can survive on your own in the bush.

Kitabi eco center

A day filled with tea fields, hills, mountains, trees, butterflies, wetlands, and medicinal plants ends with a cup of spicy Chai at an accommodation that perfectly matches the surroundings: Kitabi Eco Center. Wake up to the meditative sounds of nature, unzip your tent, or step outside and immediately overlook the endless green plains. The eco-friendly accommodation, located on Mount Kitabi, does everything to help you completely unwind: if the surroundings themselves haven’t already done that, the meditation and yoga weekends certainly will. Or enjoy a pizza evening around the campfire while the sky fills with sparkling stars.

Place to be for flora and fauna

Pure adventure, that’s the best way to describe Nyungwe Forest. This national park is the place to be when you’re travelling to Rwanda. It’s one of Africa’s largest rainforests and a paradise for lovers of flora and fauna. Here, you’ll find the most unique plant species and a variety of monkeys. Many of these plant and animal species are only found here, making it even more special! Nestled among the tea plantations, this area offers fantastic hikes. Before you know it, you’ll be surrounded by L'Hoest monkeys, vervets, or baboons, as they can all be found here. But aren’t they all way up in the trees? Well, so are you! You can take a canopy walk here, where you’ll spend two hours walking through the rainforest and cross a massive suspension bridge between the trees. From this 70-meter-high bridge, you’ll have an amazing view of the mist-covered forest. Definitely a must-do and a reason to overcome your fear of heights!

Chimpanzee trekking

But alongside the many other animal species you can encounter on your exciting hike through this ancient forest, the main attraction is the chimpanzee trekking you can do here! You’ll embark on a few-hour hike in search of these fascinating creatures. Their DNA is so similar to ours that you’ll likely notice many similarities! They build a new nest every night and are constantly moving through the forest. In the afternoon, they search for food and relax, while the little ones frolic high up in the trees. It’s a beautiful sight to watch! After a good walk, you’ll have found these playful creatures and will be able to enjoy an hour observing them. This forest may not be directly on the route, but it’s definitely worth the detour!
