Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is located around Lake Edward and Lake George: here, you can see the famous ‘tree-climbing lions’, with only two populations of them in the world.

Tree-climbing lions

Queen Elizabeth National Park is located around Lake Edward and Lake George: two large lakes connected by the Kazinga Channel (where you can have an incredible boat ride!). In Ishasha, on the northern side of the park, you can see the famous ‘tree-climbing lions’. There are only two populations in the world that love to rest in trees: the ones in Ishasha and another in southern Tanzania. The reason they seek higher ground is unclear. Perhaps they escape the heat of the savannah? Or is it to avoid the tsetse flies?

Boat safari

In Queen Elizabeth, you’ll find beautiful bush lodges and camps with views over the rivers. Take a sip of your wine while another massive hippo splashes into the water. A budget (and adventurous!) option here is camping ‘wild’ (with security, of course). Not wild enough? On the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake Edward and Lake George in the north of Queen Elizabeth, you can embark on an exhilarating boat safari. A giant population of thousands of hippos, crocodiles sunbathing to work on their tan, colourful little birds, impressive eagles, and bathing elephant families.
