Jinja

Jinja, two hours from Kampala, is located on the banks of the Nile River near Lake Victoria. It is the ultimate destination for water sports enthusiasts and is known for its vibrant atmosphere with lively markets, bars, and clubs. Escape the hustle and bustle here and enjoy both nature and adventure!

The Nile

At 6,000 km, the Nile is the second longest river in the world. While the Amazon in South America is believed to be longer, no one is truly 100% sure. The Nile begins at Lake Victoria in Jinja and flows all the way to Egypt, where it empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Historically, the river had many waterfalls along its path, but with the construction of the Speke Dam in Jinja, the water levels have risen, creating powerful rapids.

Watersports

Jinja is globally recognised as a prime spot for whitewater rafting. On a rubber boat with paddles, you'll be taken through the rapids of the Nile, which can be quite intense. You'll need a helmet and a life vest, as it's possible you might get tossed out of the boat midway and picked up by another one.

Kayaking can be challenging, but those who have mastered it love coming to Uganda to showcase their skills on the Nile in Jinja. For beginners, there are lessons with professional instructors to teach you how to stay upright in the rough waters. You can choose to kayak solo in a single kayak or, as a perfect test for your relationship or friendship, in a tandem kayak.

If you'd prefer a more relaxed pace, you can float peacefully on the Source of the Nile, the part of Lake Victoria from which the legendary Nile River is said to flow. It's the perfect place to watch a Bob Ross-style sunset while spotting colourful birds and monitor lizards through your binoculars!

Jinja Town

In Jinja, you’ll find a number of lodges and bars along the Nile where you can unwind with a cold 'Nile' beer in hand, enjoying the stunning river views. The town itself has a calm yet vibrant atmosphere, offering plenty of things to do, making it well worth a visit. Explore the local market or relax in one of the many charming cafes for a true taste of Jinja’s laid-back vibe.

Nyege Nyege Festival

If you're in Jinja in September, you're in for a treat! Just in time for the steaming, creative, and vibrant Nyege Nyege festival! Although it's a relatively new event, it grows bigger every year. Nyege Nyege is the event of the year in Uganda. For four days at the beginning of September, a deserted resort area is transformed into a magical music festival. Nestled by the Nile River, amidst jungle vegetation and the remnants of an abandoned resort, you'll find various stages where international DJs play day and night.

What about the safety in Jinja?

Compared to Uganda's capital, Kampala, Jinja is a much quieter and more manageable town. While many people in Kampala wouldn't think twice about driving a car or hopping on a bike, this is very doable in Jinja. This makes travelling as a family in Jinja much easier. You can also comfortably take a walk through the town centre, visiting shops and restaurants on foot.

Additionally, with the large number of families in Jinja, many hotels and accommodations offer family rooms. This way, you can save on costs while enjoying quality time together in one room!

Space Café on Lubas Road is one of them. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a good coffee! As you walk through the restaurant, you’ll find a lovely garden where your children can play freely. It’s also a great place to eat, with an extensive menu featuring both international and Ugandan dishes, so there's something for everyone. This is the place to be!

Java House is another great option. A fairly upscale restaurant where you can enjoy delicious coffee, lunch, or dinner while your kids burn off energy in a playground.
