Chasing stars – Cederberg Wilderness area

Cederberg, aka South Africa's best kept secret: Balance over the mountain passes, climb at Rocklands, swim in the clear mountain pools or simply enjoy nature. Sleep among the rock formations under the stars and enjoy the silence of the landscape.

Cederberg wilderness area

Some two to three hours' drive north of bustling Cape Town, you suddenly find yourself, car and all, in a completely different world. Buildings have been replaced by impressive sandstone rock formations and the noise of the big city is exchanged for cutting silences. Only the sound of the babbling river and singing birds sounds like background music! The mountainous area of the Cederberg Mountains was crowned a ‘Wilderness Area’ in 1973 and is therefore now a protected area, allowing nature to take its lovely course.

The landscape is rugged and wild, but at the same time quiet and serene. The craggy mountains, whose highest peak reaches 2027 metres, are coloured orange by iron and craggy sandstone rock formations shoot up from the landscape. The truly great outdoors enthusiasts who regularly float blissfully through the aisles of the Decathlon will absolutely love it here. Hiking, climbing, scrambling, bouldering, mountain biking, and more hiking.

Vegetation of all shapes and sizes

Not only is this place a World Heritage Site, it is also overgrown with extraordinary vegetation of all shapes and sizes. Do you like rooibos tea? Then you'll love the Cederberg Wilderness Area, because here the rooibos shoots up everywhere in bunches. Besides, the area is teeming with wildlife: baboons, roebucks, endless poultry. If you keep looking around very carefully, you might even spot a leopard! Or one of the other members of the cat family that roam here: the lynx or the African Wildcat. Maybe you are more of a dog person and prefer to aim your binoculars at the many fox species or the aardwolf that roam the area, looking for their lunch or dinner.

For the true wilderness adventurer

Winters in Cederberg are cold and wet, summers dry and hot. So like in Europe, but exactly the other way round! Most of the rain falls between May and September, and if you go to the heights, you can often even get some snow.

The true wilderness adventurer will take a real camping adventure on foot. With a lightweight tent (from Decathlon?) you explore the wild landscape, to fall asleep in the evening under the stars next to a crackling campfire, to the sound of the babbling river...

Overnight Pothole Hike

Also in Cederberg, we have a very cool overnight hike. This hike is characterised by tranquillity, lush surroundings and rocky vistas. Put on your hiking boots, bring plenty of water and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Tonight you will sleep in on a mat in the middle of the wilderness. Just you and the guide, how insane is that! Don't forget to look up tonight because the starry sky is grandiose! You will probably wake up early from the light, while the guide and whip up some breakfast.
