Mkomazi
Located in the northeast of Tanzania, bordering Kenya, Mkomazi National Park is a hidden gem. Once inaccessible, this park is now within reach, offering visitors a chance to experience its spectacular wilderness. It's also one of the best places in Tanzania to spot a rhino!

Rhino Sanctuary
While exploring the park, don’t miss the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary. This sanctuary is a conservation centre dedicated to protecting and reintroducing various rhino species native to Tanzania. Its mission is to safeguard these endangered animals, working closely with local communities and government authorities to raise awareness about rhino conservation and combat illegal trade in rhino horn.
The sanctuary is also home to a wild dog breeding programme, both initiatives managed by the African Wildlife Conservation Trust. Founded by George Adamson and Tony FitzJohn, these programmes aim to preserve and bolster the populations of these incredible species.
Mkomazi is ideal for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure. As a relatively unknown and remote national park, it’s free from the crowds of mass tourism. This ensures a unique and peaceful wilderness experience where you’re more likely to encounter wildlife in their natural habitat. The low tourist numbers also help to minimise disturbance to the park’s ecosystems, allowing its natural beauty and biodiversity to thrive.
If you’re searching for an unforgettable wilderness journey, Mkomazi National Park is the perfect destination.

National Park Highlights
Mkomazi National Park is an unspoiled haven in the northeast of Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. Previously inaccessible, it’s now easily reached by travellers looking for a thrilling wilderness escape. Framed by Mount Kilimanjaro to the west, the Pare and Usambara mountains to the south, and Tsavo National Park to the north, the park’s surrounding landscape is truly breathtaking.
Mkomazi is renowned for its abundant gazelle population, but you’ll also find plenty of giraffes, elephants, and buffalo. Predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs roam the park, although spotting them requires a bit of luck. With even more luck, you might catch sight of the critically endangered black rhino or the elusive African wild dog.
