Augrabies Falls National Park

The largest and perhaps most impressive waterfalls in South Africa. The Khoi called it “Aukoerebis,” place of great noise. Ideal to combine with Riemvasmaak’s: a desert-like area with a volcanic past that is reflected in the red granite stones and the red sand.

Remote wilderness

It is extremely hot and dry here and there is little to no infrastructure. This remote wilderness is therefore only accessible by 4×4. After a day in the desert you can relax in the natural hot springs surrounded by 80 meter high cliffs.

Augrabies Falls National Park is located in the northernmost corner of the rugged Northern Cape of South Africa. Years ago the KhoiSan called this area ‘Aukoerebis’, which means ‘place of much noise’. The loud rush of the river as it plunges over the edge of the gorge can attest to this. The magical surroundings of Augrabies Falls National Park consist of desert-like plains, interspersed with rock formations and violent waterfalls. The combination of desert and rivers makes this 500 million year old ravine well worth it!

What is there to see?

The Falls can be viewed from various spectacular viewpoints and in the national park you can spot wildlife such as the iconic springbok, the elegant giraffe and the cute klipspringer antelopes. In the camps you can see plenty of smaller animals such as mongooses and the funny dassies. There are various hiking trails, such as the 5 kilometre Dassie Trail that leads to Arrow Point: here two deep gorges meet and you have by far the best view of the falls! From the camp you can go on a Guided Night Gamedrive where you discover the park in an exciting way at night with a flashlight in your hand. Who knows, you might spot a special nocturnal animal such as an aardvark, porcupine or.. leopard!

In addition, you will find rugged 4×4 trails here and you can take a refreshing canoe trip on the Orange River in the area. Top tip: make sure you are ready with your camera at the Falls at sunset. The moment for a 'Nat-Geo' worthy photo!
