Underwater-safari with the ‘wet Big Five’

A bucket-list experience: swimming with whale sharks, manta rays, devil rays, sea turtles, and dolphins. Are you going in July, August, or September? Then you'll also have humpback whales, which have made their way all the way from the South Pole!

When you think of Africa, you think of safaris. Lions and giraffes roaming the savannah while tourists, wearing safari hats, peer through binoculars from their armoured 4x4 vehicles. Yes, it’s true—this is how many safaris in Sub-Saharan Africa look. But did you know that you can also experience a completely different kind of safari? Underwater! Did you know that along the idyllic coasts of Mozambique, you can find some of the best diving and snorkelling spots in Africa?

Ocean safari

In the small town of Tofo, on the coast of Mozambique, you can embark on an Ocean Safari. Tofo is world-famous among divers for its whale shark populations—one of the largest in the world—and they're there all year round! During an Ocean Safari, you can snorkel with these giants and get so close you feel like you could almost touch them. There’s a good chance you’ll also encounter manta rays on such a safari. These massive and harmless rays can have a wingspan of up to 7 metres!

But during this underwater safari, you'll encounter much more beauty: countless coral fish, vibrant coral reefs, dolphins, turtles, and various types of friendly sharks such as the white-tip and black-tip sharks, leopard sharks, or sometimes even hammerhead sharks! You’ll never get bored. If you explore the waters of Mozambique between May and October, you’re in for a treat: humpback whales swim along the coast and often come to say hello! These giants can grow between 13 and 16 metres long and weigh up to 30 tons. Even if you don’t spot the humpbacks while diving, you’ll almost certainly hear their magical songs.

Dive or snorkel

You can experience an underwater safari either by diving or snorkelling. The main difference is that with scuba tanks on your back, you can dive much deeper into ocean life, while snorkelling keeps you closer to the surface. Generally, to be able to dive, you’ll need a diving certification, like PADI. Don’t have one? In Tofo, there are dive schools where you can earn it. The easiest level, Open Water, can be completed in about five days. You’ll start with practice in a pool before heading out to the open sea for the real deal! It’s a pricey investment, but the advantage is that once you’ve earned your certification, you can dive anywhere at a much lower cost.

If you don’t have a diving certificate and it wasn’t on your agenda or bucket list to get one, you can also opt for guided dives. You’ll go less deep, and it will cost more, but it will definitely be an unforgettable experience! This also applies if you decide to leave the scuba tanks at home and just go snorkelling on an Ocean Safari—this way, you can even tick off the Wet Big Five!
