Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate
Lake Naivasha is a true oasis of life. While hippos float lazily in the water and pelicans skim the surface, the surrounding green hills and volcanic craters rise like a painting around you.
Wild by the water
Just two hours from Nairobi, Lake Naivasha is where adventure meets relaxation. Hop on a bike and ride among giraffes and zebras through the rugged plains of Hells Gate National Park, chill on the water while hippos curiously pop their heads up, or walk alongside wildlife on Sanctuary Farm. If you are a hiking fan, climb to the crater rim of Mount Longonot for views straight off a postcard.
Things to do around Lake Naivasha
From lazy afternoons by the water to sunny walks through the bush, you’ll never run out of things to do at Lake Naivasha.
Hell’s Gate National Park
If you are Dutch, this one is a must. Cycle your way through Hells Gate National Park, now even possible on an electric bike. You won’t see lions here, but zebras, giraffes and smaller wildlife will definitely greet you on the way. If you visit outside the rainy season you can also hike through the gorge for a bit of adventure. This is the perfect family day out and a must for fans of The Lion King, since this park inspired the famous Disney film. You can even spot the iconic rock formation that looks straight out of the movie.
Mount Longonot
If you love the water but also enjoy a good workout, Mount Longonot is the perfect hike. It takes about four hours to reach the crater rim of this dormant volcano. Once at the top you can walk around the rim and take in breathtaking 360 degree views. Officially Mount Longonot is a national park, so you might see giraffes, zebras or even baboons on your way up.
Boat safari on Lake Oloiden or Lake Naivasha
No matter which lake you choose, you are guaranteed to spot hippos. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake with plenty of hippos and a rich birdlife including herons and fish eagles. Lake Oloiden, smaller and slightly salty, used to connect to Naivasha but is now separate. As you float across the water you will likely see pink flamingos in all their glory.
Crescent Island and Sanctuary Farm
Crescent Island sits right in the middle of Lake Naivasha, so you can only reach it by boat. On this island surrounded by hippos you’ll find zebras and perfect picnic spots. You can also go horse riding here and experience what it feels like to be as tall as a baby giraffe. If you prefer to stay on the mainland, head to Sanctuary Farm. This peaceful stretch of land by the lake might not have wild predators, but you can walk or cycle freely among zebras and baboons.
