Discover the Extraordinary Zulu Culture

In Sodwana Bay, in northeastern South Africa, a unique experience awaits: cooking with a Zulu family! Discover their rich history, traditions and deep connection with nature as you prepare a delicious meal together.

Immerse yourself in Zulu culture with a cooking workshop!

The Zulu cooking class is an exclusive Charlie's Travels experience. During the cooking class, you will learn all about this special culture. It promises to be a day full of good food, chatting and enjoyment.

The adventure begins when you meet one of the family members at a local Engen garage. From there, they will escort you to their yard, where you will be welcomed with open arms by Stocks, Nomasonto and Nokwanda. This primal, sweet family is eager to share their way of life with you.

This unique experience really lets you participate in the daily life of the family. The men start by lighting the fire in a traditional hut used as a kitchen. Then it's your turn to join in! You start by helping prepare uphuthu, a staple food in South African cooking made from maize flour. While the uphuthu simmers on the fire, you help prepare the rest of the meal, including cabbage relish, fresh vegetables and a delicious peanut dish.

When everything is ready, you and the family gather to enjoy your homemade meal, sitting on homemade wicker mats. The food is simple but súper tasty and sharing it with the whole family while learning all about their culture makes for a special experience. After the meal, the women will demonstrate how they hand make the beautiful reed mats - yes, the ones you sit on with your bibs - where you can of course buy one as a souvenir of this special day in Zululand.

The Zulu Cooking Class is a unique experience that gives you an insight into the daily life of a rural family in Zululand. It's not just about learning to cook - it's about connecting with people, embracing a different way of life and making memories that will stay with you forever.
